Elizabeth Snell Obituary

SNELL, Elizabeth Bowman, age 86, of Richmond, Va., born in Warrenton, Va. in 1936, passed peacefully at home surrounded by her children. Betty loved everything outdoors, including camping, kayaking, hiking, bike riding and even white water rafting down the Grand Canyon. She was an educator, teaching reading/literacy through her career with Indiana and Virginia Departments of Education and Fauquier County Schools. An avid reader and audio book listener and one of the most curious people we know, she was a lifelong learner. She served her church as a Deacon in the Pastoral Care Ministry. She especially loved her role in the visitation ministry for those unable to attend services at church. Elizabeth is survived by her four children, John Bowman Snell, Cameron Elizabeth Glasco, David Hunter Snell and Diana Snell Hubbard; her sister, Sue Sutherland; and her seven grandchildren, Nick and Caitlin Snell, Kelsey Glasco, Aidan Snell and Emily, Luke and Owen Hubbard; as well as cousins and friends. The memorial service will be held at the Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel at Mount Vernon Baptist Church, 11220 Nuckols Road, Richmond, Va. 23059 Wednesday, February 8 at 11 a.m., with a reception following at the church. In lieu of flowers, please consider memorial contributions to Mount Vernon Baptist Church.

Betty and I worked together at the Virginia Department of Education for nearly two decades. She was smart, kind, and hardworking, and cared deeply that children had a chance to learn all thet could.
