Eloise Mickel Obituary

MICKEL, Eloise "Harriet" Harvey, died peacefully in her sleep Sunday, April 11, 2021 in Dallas, Texas. Born on August 3, 1930 in Littleton, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Eloise Bonney and Willis Harvey. She graduated from the Rex Hospital School of Nursing in Raleigh, N.C. as a Registered Nurse and accepted a position at McGuire Veterans Hospital in Richmond.

It was at McGuire Hospital where she met her husband, Thomas T. Mickel "Tommy," who was recovering from injuries sustained from the Battle of the Bulge in WWII. They were married for 30 years until Mr. Mickel's death in 1982.

Harriet is survived by her daughter, Cindy Christopher (Armand) of Dallas, Texas; and a son, Thomas T. "Mike" Mickel Jr. (Margaret) of Richmond; three granddaughters, Melissa Kennerty of Dallas, Texas, Ann Gordon Mickel and Blair Mickel of Richmond; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Jessie Pendleton, of Richmond.

Harriet was always one to help a friend in need, was a dedicated nurse and active church volunteer. She especially cherished her role as "Gran" to Melissa, Ann Gordon and Blair. Tommy's war injuries prevented him from continuing to fly, so at age of 40, she took lessons and became a private pilot. She and her husband spent their weekends flying their little Cessna around Virginia. Tangier Island was a favorite destination. She was often referred to by friends as "the flying nurse."

In 1995, she retired from Richmond Memorial Hospital and moved to Urbanna, Va., to enjoy small town life and the water. In 2010, Harriet moved to Dallas, Texas and lived with her beloved cat, Samantha, until her passing.

I met Harriet at Huguenot UMC, was in the choir with her, and used her services to watch my then young children for a weekend about three times a year. I so enjoyed her wit, common sense, and her rational yet loving conversations we had frequently. I will miss her so much!

She was my neighbor in Urbanna and a true friend. I have missed her. I know she is in a better place now. Harriet was a true christian who was always ready to help persons. Whoever they were.
