Frank Ruggles Obituary

RUGGLES, Frank Lee, It is with much sadness and regret the passing of Frank Lee Ruggles on July 4, 2021, at his beloved ranch in the Shenandoah Mountains. He was a true legend in the landscape photography field; Frank was a shining light to so many he met and worked with.

Frank was a prominent photographer, known around the world. Frank worked many years with the national parks and many other remarkable artistic accomplishments shared his immense talent. Frank came from a long line of those that served our nation. His mother served in the Army during Vietnam and his father during WWII. Frank proudly enlisted to serve our nation as an infantryman as part of the Army 82nd Airborne Division and went on to become a paratrooper and part of the famed 505th Parachute Infantry Division.

Frank's drive for service to our nation continued after leaving the Army; he went on to serve in many roles as a Contractor for many federal agencies, including the Departments of Energy, Commerce and Treasury and was even the exclusive photo printer for Secretary of State, Powell. In 2007, Frank finally got the call he had waited for and he set off on a 100,000-mile journey through all 50 U.S. States to capture America's national treasures through his lens as a Federal Photographer, a position he held through 2010.

Frank continued to serve as the National Artist Ambassador for the National Park Trust; he lectured and taught around the country and is the author of "Chasing Light, An Exploration of the American Landscape."

Along with these career highlights, Frank went on to use his artistic talents to become the Artist Ambassador for the National Park Trust, using his passion for the environment and skills to capture the majesty of the national parks through his lens to share with the world and educate children that we must protect our natural resources for generations to come.

His latest passion project for the last three years was the 79 Years Project. This project consisted of modern day re-shooting Ansel Adams 1941 Photo Murals project, shot-for-shot same days and locations with the same equipment, to show what has changed in the lifespan of the average American. Frank had spent the last several years and tens of thousands of miles researching and traveling to find each location of the original images and re-shoot them. Frank thrived on his mission to find these places his mentor shot and to bring the world his vision of this project.

He genuinely enjoyed sharing his vast knowledge of photography and his travels with all those that he met or found him, the trails of so many national parks, doing what he absolutely loved. It was not uncommon when he met someone; they could spend hours talking to him and enjoying his larger-than-life persona and inviting smile and able to talk to all ages and diverse backgrounds, easily connected with Frank and just listened in awe, then became fast friends and fans of his work.

His keen eye for capturing the beauty and details of our national parks and wildlife, from coast to coast and tens of thousands of miles he traveled to share his vision with us, will live on in his images that we all enjoyed.

Frank's true love of his life was his wife of 25 years, Lisa Crow Ruggles, who was his partner in adventure and best friend, with their shared love of the outdoors and living life to its fullest. They loved sharing time at their ranch together and exploring the valley and trails surrounding the ranch. And of course, no one can forget their furry shadow, Stanley and their fun-loving, goofy, gentle giant and supervisor of ranch life.

Frank was a true steward of the national parks and our environment. His immense talent and larger-than-life persona will be missed by all that were lucky enough to know him and view his work.

Rest easy Frank, you will be greatly missed by all, and keep chasing the light and shine upon us all and this nation's national parks you will forever be part of helping to preserve them for all. You were a gentle giant and legendary artist. We are all better off knowing you and seeing the breathtaking imagery you shared with us all.

He is survived by wife, Lisa; the many friends and loved ones whose lives he touched each day through his iconic photography; and Stanley, his Great Dane.

A memorial service will be held July 9, Friday, at 2 p.m. at the Virginia War Memorial, 621 S. Belvidere St., Richmond, Va. 23220.

The 4th of July changed in 2021 when Frank passed. His art and artistry, his wit and love of music - his own and others - has left a void that will never be filled. I miss his Facebook postings - that was my primary link to Frank. I am fortunate to have bought some prints and "Chasing Light" from Frank before his passing.
A year later, another 07/04 changed my life, for the rest of my life, as my sister, Mary Ann, unexpectedly passed away that day. Celebrating the 4th is forever less joyous for me because two beautiful people are now less accessible, yet held close in my memories and my heart.

I am stunned to hear about Frank's passing. I was Frank's Platoon Sergeant in B Co 2/505th Parachute Infantry Regiment. What a great and funny person. He was a great Soldier who could endure hardships and adversity. Words cannot express my sympathy to his family.

My deepest condolences to Lisa and family. I met Frank during the opening of Everglades Recreation Center in The Villages where I am a resident. I attended his lecture and purchased his book. I often visit the center to view his beautiful photography as reminders of the many outstanding National Parks which I visited. Frank leaves behind a lasting legacy of capturing the magnificence of our great country to share with the World. He made and will continue to make a difference in my and others lives. A life well-lived for others to aspire to be so bold in embracing
their dreams. Rest well, Frank.

I was recently thinking of Frank. Back in 2014 I met him in Ashburn Va at a camera store. We got to talking and and told him about a project I was looking to have photographed...me being a landscape architect. Frank was excited to help me out so he agreed and did the shoot. I really enjoyed getting to know him and was very struck by the sudden news of his passing. I was just thinking to ask him if I could buy one of his photos for my house. This is such terrible news. I am so sorry to hear about it. I will make sure to do a special blog about Frank and share the awesome shots he took of the property.

Frank was an amazing photographer who inspired so many. He had a way of teaching others how to find the beauty in the world. I have become a little bit of a photographer because of him and his beautiful photos. I didn´t get much time with him like I would have loved to seeing how I am his niece. He use to tell me proudly about his time in the service and being a paratrooper. He would encourage me to enlist in the service while I was in high school. He was as close to a superhero as any person could be. I love you and will always miss you Uncle Frank. I will take a hike and continue to do photography, hopefully I can capture the light well enough to make you proud.

You did it. You laughed, you loved, you traveled from sea to sea and climbed the highest mountain. You slept on top of that mountain to awake with the sunrise. You captured the sun between the rocks. And you made my heart happy with your wonderful life. I will miss seeing your wonderful photo's and hearing about all your adventures. With great loved for you and your wife Lisa. I give my farewells and tears.

Frank was larger than life, nearly a super hero. So impressive is his resume, he blazed his own trail. He wasn't the type to give up if the going turned tough, nope he just dug in his boots and kept going. From playing in a couple bands, to his time as a paratrooper, he even owned a shrimp boat once used to collect ballast stones from the Charleston River. After Meeting Miss Lisa and he learned his way around the camera, it was a whole new way of seeing the natural world. Frank had a gift, especially when shooting the western states, maybe that came from being an Arizona native. He could go where hundreds of of tourist visit each year, yet he would find the sweet spot to be photographed. I feel so for Lisa, and I send her my deepest sympathies as she works her way forward, holding close Frank's love for her. Frank was my little brother, he was silly and a ball to grow up with, especially when kids still played outside. I'm left with the images in my mind of the boy I grew up with & of the man who photographed our beautiful National Parks. Happy Trails Frank, you're loved & missed.

Frank has been a long time friend. I remember him hanging out after football games at a local pizza place, coming over to go sledding on sheets of plastic with 5 or six people piled up. Hanging out at my house tormenting my parents. Frank had a different outgoing personality, but it made him who he is. I will miss him dearly. Lisa, it is with much love that you are in my prayers.

We have Frank to thank for the 9' x 25' photograph of a very large mural by beloved local artist Bill Whiting. He not only photographed the original mural painted on the wall in a Winchester dining room only 12 feet wide, but installed the resulting photograph in our stairwell - a very challenging location.

We loved having his This Land is Your Land exhibit, and had hoped to have his work back after completion of the 79 Year Project.

He was such a generous, good soul! I hate knowing he's gone!
