Fred Campbell Obituary

CAMPBELL, Fred Tyler, of Richmond, died on July 9, 2007. He is survived by his wife, Jane; daughters, Margaret Campbell, and Lynn Carney and her husband, Dan; three grand-children, Shannon, Daniel and Meriel; and his brother, Mac Campbell. He, his late sister, Jane, and his brother Mac are the children of the late Coy and Sadie Campbell. Fred grew up in Fieldale, Va., served in World War II, and was in the 1950 class at Virginia Tech. He was a member of Tech's Ut Prosim Society and was honored with The Academy of Distinguished Alumni award for engineering. He started an endowed scholarship at Virginia Tech for equine science students. He was the driving force behind the fundraising for the building of the school's horse riding arena, which is named after him. After graduation, he started Campbell and Associates, Inc., a manufacturer's representative for utility companies. His loves were horses and golf, once shooting as low as 70. He was a longtime member of Hermitage Country Club and took great pleasure in the game. Among his many awards, he received the Horse Industry Service award from the Virginia Horse Council. He was a charter member of the Virginia Arabian Horse Association and a founding member of Old Dominion Arabian Horse Association. Services are being held at All Saints Episcopal Church, 8787 River Road on Monday, July 16 at 3 p.m. Fred's friends and family are invited to a celebration of his life at Hermitage Country Club at 4 p.m. on Monday, July 16th. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Fred and Jane Campbell Endowed Scholarship Account #860114, Virginia Tech, attn: Jane Stringer, University Development 0336, 902 Prices Fork Road, Blacksburg, Va. 24061.

I met Fred as a young man working for GE, and later worked for his agency. He was a good businessman, and I learned many positive things from him over the years.
