He was a member of the Chamberlayne Society of St. Christopher's School and Treasurer of the Richmond Animal Welfare Foundation. Known affectionately as "Flip," Garland loved sports as a participant and a spectator. He was a member of the Rockets, a semi-pro baseball team and a lifelong member of The Country Club of Virginia, where he had a strong passion for golf, tennis and racquetball. He had a residence at the Oceans at 40th St. in Virginia Beach, and was a former member of the Princess Anne Country Club. He enjoyed travel, dancing and horse racing. Garland loved spending time with family and friends. He was a humble, loyal friend who touched so many people with his inherent kindness and generosity.
