George Porter Obituary

Dr. George W. "Bill" Porter, Jr.

July 29, 2025

Dr. George W. "Bill" Porter, Jr., 93, a longtime resident of North Chesterfield, went to be with Jesus and his wife of 47 years, Marie, the evening of July 29, 2025. He passed peacefully, and was surrounded by his family.

He is survived by his sons, Michael (Jan), Stephen (Julie), John (Jill), Matthew (Sharon), Eden (Becky); daughter, Amy Miller (Todd); 14 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and countless friends. He was preceded in death by his son, George W. Porter, III; twin sister, Jane; and first wife, Elizabeth.

Bill grew up in Richmond in the height of the Depression, and well understood the value of a dollar before graduating from John Marshall High School and taking an early job as a brakeman on the local railroad. Bill served his nation proudly by attending the Coast Guard Academy before serving in the Marine Corps during the Korean War.

He graduated from the University of Richmond, and went on to the Medical College of Virginia before starting a 35+ year career in Family Medicine. With offices at Chippenham and Johnston-Willis Hospitals, Dr. Porter was a pillar of the local medical community. He tended to elderly and shut-in patients through house calls, with his trusty leather doctor's bag in hand, and errands were rarely complete without a greeting from a current or former patient.

Bill had a passion for the great outdoors, including white water canoeing and rafting; fishing the surf at a beach or on the open water; long cross country train trips or drives, always opting for the "scenic route"; trying out new recipes in the kitchen; exploring Porter family history; and tackling most any household, carpentry, or mechanical project. Following his retirement, he spent most of his time building his country cabin and maintaining his property in Cartersville, Va.

Bill was a devout Christian and a strong leader and provider for his family, and was enthralled hearing and sharing his children's, and even more so his grandchildren's, activities and accomplishments. He leaves an enduring legacy and cherished memories, and will be dearly missed.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, August 14, 2025 at Bliley's – Chippenham, 6900 Hull Street Road. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, August 15, 2025 at Winfree Church, 13617 Midlothian Turnpike.
