Gilbert Stanley Green

1932 - 2023

It is with great sadness that the family of Gilbert Stanley Green announces his passing on October 28, 2023 at Bon Secours Hospice in Bon Air, Va. Gil was loved by all who met him and will be missed by his family every single day.

Gil was an honorable and principled man who treated everyone with respect and kindness. If you thought he was interested in what you had to say, you were right. Gil passed away at the age of 91, still learning and listening.

Gil is survived by his loving wife of twenty eight years, Georgie. His devoted stepchildren Stacey Soble, Eric Soble, wife Tracey, and grandson Jake Soble will miss and remember his guidance and love forever.

Gil was born on June 22, 1932 in Peekskill, New York to Edith Goldman and Sol Green. His mother passed away shortly after his first birthday and he and his sister Mona went to live with their maternal grandparents on their farm in New Jersey. Gil loved life on the farm and had the devotion and love of his grandparents as well as his aunts who lived there and came to visit. Years later, he would pen a remembrance about life on the farm that was welcomed by cousins and other relatives who were lovingly formatting a family tree that continues to be tended today.

Gil's father remarried and Mona and Gil went to Ossining and then Peekskill to live with his step-mother Clara and father Sol. Clara was devoted to Gil and Mona. When Gil moved to Richmond, Clara came to live at Beth Shalom so that she would be close by. Gil had a childhood full of wonderful and mischievous stories that he loved to tell. Gil graduated from Peekskill High School with lifelong friends, Gene Weinger and Al Clementi. These friendships lasted for all of Gil's life and were so very precious to him.

Gil was a talented and accomplished man. He had a degree in Education from Buffalo State and a second degree in Ceramic Engineering from Alfred University. Gil was an Army Veteran. His many accomplishments during his engineering career included two international patents for the design of dual flow meter instrumentation. He taught flow measurement classes for The Foxboro Company across the United States, in England and Russia.

Gil was a baker, a woodworker, a seamster, a potter, an artist, a volunteer , a reading and math tutor, a shade tree mechanic, a traveler, a classical music lover, a crafter and a mentor. He loved the times that he shared these skills at many organizations around Richmond. His times with the Jewish Community Center's 5400 Club brought him great pleasure when he retired. Sheri Menlowe-Barck and Marty Bergman were dear friends at the 5400 Club that he always looked forward to seeing.

Gil was recently reunited with his daughter Sharon Raynes and her husband Steve of California. He wonderfully learned of granddaughters, Laura Raynes and her husband Mark Dizon and Diana Raynes and her partner Emma Wynn. It was with much happiness that Gil met his dear sister Mona's daughter Susan Clark and her husband Frank of Florida for the first time in November of last year.

Gil was predeceased by his parents Edith Goldman Green, his father Sol Green, his stepmother Clara Green, his sister Mona Green and his daughter Evelyn Gabai.

The family would like to thank Stacy, Yishaia, Nicole and Laura of Ascent Hospice for their love and care for Gil. The family would also like to thank Angel of Woody's Funeral Home for her loving support. The gracious and meaningful service led by Cantor Sarah Beck-Berman of Congregation Beth Ahabah was a blessing for us all.

A life well lived is all that we can hope for - that we leave people that we love with the knowledge that we loved them and have done our best by them. This Gil did in copious ways. It was easy to love Gil and love never ends. His life was a blessing.
