Gilbert Walker "Sonny" Holmes III

HOLMES, Mr. Gilbert "Sonny" Walker III, age 87, passed away unexpectedly Friday, February 10, 2023. Sonny was preceded in death by his parents, Gilbert W Holmes Jr., Leonora Powell Holmes; and brother, Wayne. He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Helen Dunnington Holmes; children, Mitch Holmes (Lori), Tia Rosenmeier (Greg) and Troy Holmes (Amy), eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; sister, Kay Miles; and brothers, Donald Holmes and Ray Holmes (Nancy). Sonny was retired from Philip Morris as Plant Manager after 35 years of service. He was a loving husband and father who spent his early years in athletics earning induction into both the Hermitage High School and Emory & Henry College Sports Hall of Fame as a running back. In retirement he enjoyed golf, fishing and spending time with family at his home on the Rappahannock River. The family will receive friends at Bliley's Funeral Home, 3801 Augusta Ave. on Tuesday, February 14 from 4 to 6 p.m. and Funeral Services at the same location on Wednesday, February 15 at 3 p.m. Internment at Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery with reception to follow.
