Helen Taylor Obituary

TAYLOR, Honorable Helen Marie, passed away on January 25, 2022, at the age of 98, quietly and peacefully in her sleep with family by her side.

Helen Marie Taylor loved America and the liberty, creativity and prosperity she saw produced by the U.S. Constitution and our free enterprise system. She worked with passion and perseverance to protect and enhance the spiritual and intellectual foundations and the shared living history from which America's many blessings flow.

Mrs. Taylor was involved in public service as a political activist and preservationist for all of her adult life. She served on the Board of Directors of numerous conservative organizations and was Vice President of her close friend Phyllis Schlafly's Eagle Forum from 1981 to the present. Mrs. Taylor was proud of her service to our country through her appointment by President Ronald Reagan as a United States Representative to the United Nations from 1986 to 1987 and previously as the Ranking U.S. Delegate to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

In Virginia, she was most famous for standing in front of a paving machine that was to lay asphalt over the original cobblestone on Monument Avenue in 1968. She later served as President of the Monument Avenue Association and as President of the James Monroe Memorial Foundation (1979-1993). She cofounded the James Madison Museum in Orange, Virginia and has an extensive collection of interesting and historically significant documents on loan to the Virginia Historical Society. She worked to help catalyze the establishment of Montpelier and received its first and only lifetime membership in 2009.

While public service is the dominant theme of most of her adult life, Helen Marie Taylor really beamed with joy as she reminisced over her career as an actress and as a founder and supporter of some of the best repertory theater companies in the U.S. She was an Honours Graduate of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London, England and had an extremely fulfilling career as an actress. She both taught Shakespeare at the American Academy of Dramatic Art and acted in Shakespearean plays including Ophelia in Hamlet where she received a Best Young Actress Award.

Mrs. Taylor loved her native city of Waco, Texas and founded a museum there as a gift to her hometown. She described herself as a Legend Bearer, borne of a loving relationship with her grandmother, Sallie Sears Taylor, who spent countless hours sharing stories about her life and the history of her family. Mrs. Taylor endeavored to live a life worthy of her grandmother's investment of time by sharing history with the world through numerous educational efforts. In 1986, she purchased the old Barron Springs Elementary School in an effort to preserve the land known as the first campground for Waco Indians and to preserve the history of the school. She believed that the full measure of history should be preserved as an education for all Americans. The museum opened in 1993 to tell the rich history of the land, the school, the local people of Waco and her "We the People" exhibit to include the larger story of foundational documents for our country including the U.S. Constitution.

Helen Marie Taylor was a larger than life character and will be deeply missed by her surviving sons, Howell Taylor and George Taylor Munroe; and her beloved grandson, Zachary Taylor Munroe. She was predeceased by her first husband, George Barber Munroe; and her second husband, Jaquelin Erasmus Taylor. She was also predeceased by her sons, Jaquelin Pendleton Taylor and Ralph William Taylor Munroe.

Funeral services will be private and a Celebration of Life will be announced at a future date. The family of Mrs. Taylor would especially like to thank her caregivers, Barbara Jennings, Page Chauncey and Roxie Pedroli; as well as her loyal assistant of 17 years, Bonnie Ferris; and her property caretaker of 16 years, Rufus Towles. Contributions in her memory may be made to the James Madison Museum, 129 Caroline Street, Orange, Va. 22960 or The Montpelier Foundation, Development Department, P.O. Box 911, Orange, Va. 22960.

Helen Marie Taylor has an enduring legacy in Waco, TX. She is still remembered and her actions recalled by many in Waco and beyond. Her museum endures in Waco, TX and is still open to the public. Whenever I recall my short time with her, I still bring to mind those words of the Old Testament, "....in those days giants walked the earth."

Some of these entries would have delighted Helen. She was a walking genealogical encyclopedia all by herself. We were related to her through the Taylors, the Fitzhughs, and the Conways. In the James Madison Museum in Orange, Virginia, we discovered with delight an old Conway sofa, looking like something someone had dragged out of a pyramid. There had been mention of it in an ancient Conway diary! Helen was, for so many of us, the extended family's scribe, its benefactress, and its leader. When I saw the dumpster fire that anarchists were turning Richmond into, I knew what her reaction would be, and I grieved for her. May we go forward, using her devotion and light and courage to guide us.

Although my great-grandfather (Taylor Sr.) and grandfather (Taylor Jr.) knew Helen Marie personally, I only had the pleasure of speaking to her over the phone during the summer of 2021 after she received a letter I wrote to her. We spoke for almost an hour about everything regarding our shared family history (Port Royal and Port Conway) and passion for preserving history. Helen Marie's unfaltering love for Virginia history, the Republic, and liberty was contagious -- a memory that I will carry with me forever.

She was one of The Greatest Generation, the kind of person who understood what is being lost in this country, and she fought bravely and tirelessly against it. May we continue her work, while there is still something left to be salvaged. She was a beacon of light and strength in a world of growing darkness. May she rest knowing we continue the battle.

She was truly a grand lady and quite a force of nature. After one of my Revolutionary War presentations in Waco, TX which she attended, she took me and a few others to view the museum. It was an eye-opening event to see what she had single-handedly accomplished there! We shall not see her kind again!

I sent Helen Marie yellow roses when she stood firm to save Lee's statute during the Monument Ave riots. Regrettably, despite her legal efforts, at 95 years-old, she could not display the same zeal she had when laying down on Monument Ave to save the cobblestones! Her point was made very effectively. Helen Marie became sullen over the loss of Lee when Monument Ave was changed forever. I think she knew "times had changed." Those who knew her, will always remember this woman of passion, whose spunky efforts were an inspiration to all. I'm glad we were friends---she will always be remembered with great fondness.

My sincere condolences to Helen's loved ones in their time of bereavement. Helen's stature was such that she stood head and shoulders above most ordinary human beings; she always spoke her mind bravely, and she made a huge impact on the world in a hundred different ways. In all of these regards, she left the world a better place for having been here. She was unrelentingly generous when it came to protecting and promoting the history of her family and her country, and her absence creates a void for which we will be hard pressed to find a similar benefactress. As a friend she was consistently loyal and kind, and as a citizen she will occupy a special place of honor in the pantheon of American patriots. May God reward her by holding her safely in the palm of his hand, until we see her again.

May the Lord be with family and friends during this time of loss. As a Wacoan, I loved reading a synopsis of Ms. Taylor and determined she was an exceptional lady. In learning about her adventures, advancements, and professionalism in the political and philanthropy realm caused me to realize she was blessed with intelligence, the will and means to truly make a positive difference in Waco.

Oh my God, what a loss. She was a "larger than life" lady indeed. I had not heard that she had passed. I grieve her death very greatly. She was, in many ways, a steel girder, like my parents and grandparents. I find myself actually shedding tears over her departure, and I did not anticipate my own reaction. May God hold her in his embrace, and reward her for the courage and dedication that she exhibited on so many occasions in her life. I invited her to Ellerslie Plantation on a few occasions, but she never took us up on the offer. She was greatly pleased with our last birthday gift of an ancient copy of "Bandana Ballads," and we were happy it gave her such pleasure. I recall with great joy her sitting and patiently explaining my children's lineage to them in detail, and directing them to be proud of it. We will miss her sorely, and all of her generation. We will not see their like again. RIP, "Aunt Helen."

Mrs. Helen Marie Taylor was a remarkable woman. The very first time I spoke with her that was apparent to me. Neither one of us wanted to get off the phone! I treasure the numerous times after that, where she simply shared. Her passion always came through and never waned. She strove for excellence in everything and it showed. Her poise and grace was beyond external. I'm sure I was not the only person inspired by Mrs. Taylor. It was an honor to know her.

I was saddened to learn of the death of Mrs. Taylor, my distant relation through the Gurley line. Her great-grandmother was my fourth great-grandfather´s sister. We shared a live for family, our native Waco, and for our country. Though our views differed on numerous subjects, I can confidently say, Helen Marie was one of the most colourful and accomplished women I´ve ever had the pleasure of knowing. I saw her last, three or four years ago, on one of her visits to Waco at a DAR reception held at the Clifton House. She was, as ever, vivacious and engaging. May you rest in peace, and rise in glory.
