Henry Silberman Obituary

Dr. Henry K. Silberman died December 3, 2003 after a long illness. Born in Breslau, Germany, he studied medicine in Italy until expelled by the German-Italian alliance in 1938. He emigrated to the United States and served in the U.S. Army from 1941-46, receiving a field commission during the Battle of the Bulge. He graduated from NYU's School of Medicine, served his residency in psychiatry at Fitzsimmons Army Hospital in Denver, Colo., and continued regular army service with a tour of duty in Germany. He also served at Walter Reed Medical Hospital in Washington, D.C., becoming Chief of Psychiatry prior to his retirement in 1965. He moved to Columbia, Mo., serving as director of a mental health center and then Associate Professor at the University of Missouri School of Medicine. In 1972, he accepted a professorship at the Medical College of Virginia and moved to Richmond, Va., where he lived until his death. He was a Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and held the Army's Legion of Merit. He was married to Janina Jonas Silberman, formerly of Manchester, England. He is also survived by his children, Ralph Michael of Arlington, Va., Shirley Ann of Richmond, Va. and Eleanor Rose of Santa Rosa, Calif.; and two grandchildren, Evan and Magdalen Silberman of Arlington, Va. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the American Parkinson Disease Association or a charity of one's choice.
