Henry Spalding Obituary

SPALDING, Henry Cannon, Jr., died on January 13, 2023. He was the son of the late Henry Cannon Spalding, M.D. and Sue Sharp Spalding and spent his entire life in Richmond and Gloucester County. Henry was predeceased by his wife, Kaye Brinkley Spalding, who died in 2017 after 56 years of marriage. He then married Alice Horsley Siegel in 2019, who survives him. His sister, Margaret Blair Spalding Morgan, predeceased him.

Henry is survived by his three children, Mary Parke Spalding Holland (Wesley) of Goochland, Henry C. Spalding III (Wendi) of Richmond and Maria Blair Spalding Hadlow (Patrick) of St. Louis; and six grandchildren, Captain Robert Holland and William Henry Holland, Benjamin Cannon Spalding and Emily Willard Spalding, Seth Goodman Hadlow and Parker Blair Hadlow.

Henry attended St. Christopher's School in Richmond before graduating from Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Virginia, and Hampden-Sydney College, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude. Henry served on the boards of both the Episcopal High School and Hampden-Sydney, where he was a trustee emeritus at the time of his death. In college, he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Omicron Delta Kappa. He was also a former trustee of St. Catherine's School.

A lifetime resident of Richmond, Henry also had a passion for Gloucester County, where his family has a second residence. His book, Crab Nets and Sunsets, relates a few of those happy memories.

Henry worked for State Planters Bank as a trust officer for six years, served as a stockbroker and senior executive vice president of Scott and Stringfellow for 23 years and finally, as a managing director of Lowe, Brockenbrough & Co. before his retirement in 2000. He was an avid collector, and he and his wife Kaye donated to Hampden-Sydney their collection of early Virginia maps to the Bortz Library. Henry was the longest living member of The Richmond Stamp Club when he died, and a life member of the American Philatelic Society and a member of The Royal Philatelic Society of London.

He was a former member of The Country Club of Virginia and The Commonwealth Club, where he served as president. He was also president of the Roller-Bottimore Foundation, a charitable trust, for over 20 years. Among other eleemosynary entities, he was a board member of the Westminster-Canterbury Foundation, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Foundation, The Valentine Museum and The Library of Virginia Foundation. Henry was a member of St. James's Episcopal Church and served as a vestryman. Memorial services will be held at St. James's Episcopal Church on January 19, 2023, at 11:30 a.m., following a private burial in Hollywood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Hampden-Sydney College, the Rosewell Foundation, or the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.

On behalf of the members of the Greater Richmond Stamp Club (GRSC), I want to say how much we treasured his friendship and membership in our club over the many years that he was a member of the Greater Richmond Stamp Club. We shall miss him and his passion for collecting stamps.

I grew up at Clay Bank and in Richmond. Our house was at the end of the road with the creek and the York on 3 sides. Remember the Spaldings esp Henry, very well. Also played at the ruins of Rosewell. Those were good, simple days of crabbing & fishing and just being a kid, Peace to you, Henry. Diane Newman

Following my return from Vietnam and subsequent discharge from the Marine Corps, Henry kindly offered me employment at Scott and Stringfellow. He knew I was a vet, and a Kappa Sig at Hampden-Sydney. He made adjusting to civilian life in those turbulent times a lot easier.

I don´t remember a life without Henry in it. He was like my brother and we shared many fun memories of growing up on the York. He was smart, funny, a real gentleman who showed compassion for all. He will be remembered, loved, and admired by all who knew him.

Brilliant man with a great sense of humor. It was my highest pleasure and honor to have worked with him. I considered him a mentor. I felt like he took special interest in me. He collected maps. Won't need one to reach heaven.
