James Guy Obituary

James Patrick

Guy ll, Esq., K.M.

James Patrick Guy II, Esq., K.M., died surrounded by his family on January 21, 2026. Jim, born in San Jose, California, lived his life all over the world, including New Jersey, Paris, Belgium, and Germany and Fairfax, Charlottesville, Richmond, and Saxe, Virginia. Jim's great passions in life were his family, the rule of law, music, and his faith. A double 'Hoo (B.A. '87, Law '90), he represented Virginia's rural electric cooperatives, and the legal profession itself, as the 128th president of the Virginia Bar Association. From 1995 he fronted the Irish American pub band Uisce Beatha, which played for decades at Rare Olde Times Pub in Richmond's west end. In 2018, Jim was invested as a Knight of the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and of Malta, one of the oldest lay religious orders of the Catholic Church. Jim was also a Knight of Columbus and a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians. He served on the Virginia Board of Directors of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and contributed to the cause for many years before and after. Of all his many accomplishments and titles (including Kentucky Colonel), however, his favorite was "Jimmy," the name his beloved granddaughters called him.

Jim is preceded in death by his father, James Patrick Guy; his nephew, Teague Matthew Guy; and his father-in-law, Edward Albert Trott, Jr. He is survived by his wife of thirty-five years, the love of his life, Judith; his children, Callaghan (Daniel MacPhee), Seamus (Olivia Echegaray), and Mairead; and granddaughters, Imogen and Aoife; his mother, Dorothy; brothers and sister, nieces, nephews, in-laws, out-laws, cousins, and many, many friends.

Ní bheidh a leithead arís ann.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, January 28, 2026 at Bliley's - Central, 3801 Augusta Ave., Richmond, Virginia 23230. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, January 29, 2026, St. Paul's Catholic Church, 909 Rennie Ave, Richmond, Virginia 23227. Burial to follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
