James Johnson Obituary

JOHNSON, James E., was the second son of Alease and Cecil Johnson. He graduated from Luther Foster High School (1967), St. Paul's College (1971), entered military service (1971 to 1974) and graduated from VCU with an M.S. degree in Rehabilitation Counseling (1977). James worked in several counseling positions before realizing a stronger desire for more physically challenging work and eventually began a career as a Circulation District Manager for Richmond Newspapers, Inc. James enjoyed interacting with colleagues and used those counseling skills everywhere.

James is survived by his wife, Janice; children, Tonya Rhodes (Travis), Sonya Bullock (Deron) and Jeremy C. Johnson; sister, Gloria J. Gray (Milton); five grandchildren, Tianna, Taylor, Alyvia, Nicholas and Yara; sisters-in-law, Janet SC Dugger and Reginia Smith; brothers-in-law, Milton Gray and James A. Smith III; mother-in-law, Mrs. Bessie J. Smith. He leaves other family, colleagues and even treasured friends whom he didn't see often.

James worked too much, laughed sometimes, could talk excessively and loved deeply with a quiet loner type façade. James was an exceptional person.

I knew James back many years ago when we worked together in circulation. He was a genuinely nice guy and a great colleague.

I have only known James a few short months but he has left an impression on me that will last a lifetime. His hard work and dedication are beyond compare. His love for his family so strong he spoke of you every day with pride. I already miss his voice. I am truly sorry for your profound loss.

I met James through the newspaper company and discovered we were from the same county. Whenever I saw him, he would ask if I'd been to the big city (Blackstone) recently. He laughed a lot and was a delight to be around. As one who travels to Blackstone frequently, I had hoped I would bump into James during my retirement. I am so sorry.
