James Poe Obituary

James Kyle Poe

September 17, 1956 - July 20, 2025

James Kyle Poe passed away peacefully at home on July 20, 2025. Kyle was born at Fort Benning, Georgia, on September 17, 1956, the fourth child and only son of Lt. Colonel Jim Poe and Betty Bamford Poe. With three doting older sisters, he got the lay of the land quickly and became the apple of everyone's eye. He was famous for borrowing money from family members despite having ample funds in his wallet. Though diagnosed as "mentally retarded' as a young child in the misguided parlance of the times, Kyle had an amazing memory, was clever, funny, and daily demonstrated that a label based on an IQ diagnosis reveals nothing about a person's perseverance, humanity, interests, and abilities. His Army family's frequent moves and inconsistent access to Special Education for many years made his childhood tough and lonely. After settling in Virginia Beach, he attended and graduated from high school, securing a job at a local hospital. His caring boss helped him obtain his driver's license. He moved to Charlottesville and then Richmond with family. In 1993, he started receiving support from Richmond Residential Services in his own apartment while usually working both a full-time and a part-time job. He loved collies, hiking, travel, the Washington Redskins, Boston Celtics, and U.Va., and spending time with family and friends. Kyle entered hospice care in April and was cared for with love, patience, and compassion by his RRSI staff team and James River Hospice. The family is incredibly grateful and humbled by the care Kyle received from Maddy, Wakita, Jolene, Ulric, Kim, Richard, Tia, Adrienne, Carlia and Glenwood as well as Philip Denny, N.P. for years of excellent medical care. A celebration of Kyle's life will be held in the fall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Richmond Residential Services.
