James Thomason Obituary
James Kirk Thomason
April 22, 1954 - July 21, 2025
James Kirk Thomason, a devoted husband, beloved father, supportive brother, generous neighbor, and friend to many, passed away peacefully at his home on July 21st, 2025. He was 71 years young. He died just months after his life long love, Pam. Kirk and Pam were high school sweethearts whose love carried them through decades of marriage, raising a family, and a brief but memorable retirement. As a youth, Kirk diligently worked at his family's business, Thomason & Company Hardware (Richmond, Virginia). Kirk often prepared the family meal after Sunday church. This quiet act of care grew into a lifelong passion of loving people through food. He earned his bachelors degree from Virginia Commonwealth University. Kirk started his career as a Park Ranger at Natural Chimneys (Mt. Solon, Virginia) where his days were spent organizing the jousting tournament and nights were spent around a campfire. Shortly after starting a family, Kirk & Pam settled in Waynesboro, where they remained until their passing. Kirk retired from the Virginia Department of Transportation after decades of state service. Born with a heart as wide as the rivers he fished, Kirk had a gruff charm, a quick wit, and a deeply kind heart. Whether he was sharing vegetables from his garden, masterfully completing his crossword puzzles, spotting wild asparagus alongside the county fence lines, casting lines with lifelong friends under the nickname 'Moose', or grumbling at the latest so-called "smart" gadget, he was wholly, unapologetically himself and that's exactly how everyone loved him. He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, quiet generosity, and authenticity. His presence will be missed in every garden row, every early morning fishing trip, and every honest conversation over a jar of something spicy and a cold beer. He is survived by a daughter, Clair (Antonio), son Luke (Jennifer), sister Mary Sue Campbell, sister Sarah Mabon, sister Martha O'Connell, brother David Thomason; grandchildren Genesis Benitez, Samuel Benitez, Maximus Benitez and Dexter Thomason, along with many other extended family members. He joins his brothers--Harold Ray Thomason, and William Roberts "Robbie" Thomason, and parents-William G. "Tommy" Thomason, Jr. and Hazel Thomason, in rest. A celebration of Kirk's life will be held at Lake Anna in September 2025. Please contact the family for details. In lieu of flowers, plant a seed, cast a line, or do something for a neighbor or friend. That's what Kirk would've done.
