Jane Koontz Obituary

Jane Carmack Koontz

September 20, 1944 - July 15, 2025

Jane Carmack Koontz, 80, died on Tuesday, July 15, 2025 at Bellaire at Stone Port Assisted Living and Memory Care in Harrisonburg, VA after fighting Stage IV triple negative breast cancer for five months. Jane was born on September 20, 1944 in Richmond, VA to Alton Shelburn and Irene Jones Carmack.

She graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School. She attended Madison College for two years before moving back to Richmond to attend Virginia Commonwealth University where she received a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. Following Jane's graduation, she taught second grade at A.M. Davis Elementary in Richmond, VA for two years. After marrying Samuel Brock Koontz, Jane and Sam moved to Woodstock, VA where Jane taught third grade for 28 years at W.W. Robinson Elementary. After retiring full time from teaching in 2000, Jane taught at an after school elementary program in Bridgewater and North River, VA for 11 years.

While teaching for 41 years, Jane taught thousands of elementary school students. When she saw students in need, she purchased new clothing and school supplies to help them. She spent many personal hours hand making Christmas stockings for her students with small gifts inside. Jane was always willing to go the extra mile to help her students and their educational pursuits with her encouragement and positive attitude.

Jane is survived by her loving husband, Sam, with whom she shared 55 years of marriage. She is also survived by her daughter, Paige Koontz Sherman and her son, Samuel. Jane's granddaughters, Sydney Ann Sherman and Lindsay Grace Sherman, survive her as well. In addition, Jane's brother-in-law, James Koontz and her nieces, Beth Grinstead (Jeff) and Heather Gomez (Victor) and many cousins still survive.

Preceding her in death are her parents, Alton Shelburn Carmack and Irene Jones Carmack; her sister, Nancy Catherine; and her brother, Alton Shelburn, Jr., who both died at birth.

A visitation will be held Friday, July 25, 2025 from 5-7 p.m. at Kyger Funeral Home located at 3173 Spotswood Trail, Harrisonburg, VA. A memorial service will then be held Saturday, July 26, 2025 at 10 a.m. at the funeral home with interment immediately following at Lacey Spring Cemetery, 364 Lacey Spring Rd, Harrisonburg, VA 22802.
