Jerold Evans Obituary

EVANS, Jerold Wayne, was born on December 28, 1927, in Danville, Virginia and died on October 28, 2021, in Richmond. He was the fourth of eight children born to James H. and Ethel Throckmorton Evans. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Lucile Martin Evans; by his brothers, Beverly, Ronald and Julian Evans; and by his sisters, Norma Cross, Ardeth Holden and Gail King. He is survived by his daughter, Sandy Evans of Richmond; his daughter, Susan Evans Reed and her husband, George, of Raleigh, N.C.; his favorite grandson, Joseph Evans Reed and his wife, Miranda, also of Raleigh; his sister, Fay Evans of Paris, France; and by numerous nieces and nephews and their families.

Mr. Evans graduated from Manchester High School, where he excelled in three sports. He worked for most of his career in the construction industry, 32 of those in roofing operations. In 1970, he and his wife founded Jerold W. Evans Roofing, Inc., which they owned and operated for 16 years. He served as President of the Virginia Association of Roofing Contractors, on the faculty of the Roofing Industrial Education Institute and as a roofing consultant.

He was especially proud of his service in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1948 to 1952. He was a charter member of the James M. Slay Detachment of the Marine Corps League and remained an active volunteer with the Marine Toys for Tots program as long as his health permitted.

Mr. Evans maintained a lifetime love of learning, with keen interests in history and genealogy. He was a member of most museums and historical societies in the Richmond area and in retirement, he served as a guide for Historical Richmond Tours.

Mr. Evans was a man of quiet faith who was active in his church community for most of his adult life. He was known for having a twinkle in his eye, never meeting a stranger and having a special love for children and animals.

His daughters would like to thank the staff of Sitter & Barfoot Veterans Care Center for their exceptional care of Mr. Evans during the final chapter of his life.

If you would like to make a gift in memory of Mr. Evans, please consider the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, 18251 Quantico Gateway Drive, Triangle, Va. 22172, or go to www.toysfortots.org/donate/forms/tribute/Default.aspx.

A service will be scheduled for a later date. Arrangements are being handled by the Cremation Society of Virginia.
