Jewell McDanel Obituary

Jewell S. McDanel

August 22, 1924 - July 11, 2024

Jewell (Judy) S. McDanel went to her eternal rest on July 11, 2024, forty-two days shy of her 100th birthday. She was the daughter of the late Roger and Pearl Slusher of Floyd, VA and was preceded in death by her husband Robert L. McDanel, as well as her four sisters and brother. She is survived by her daughter Melissa Jarvis (Jerry), her son Lewis McDanel (Vicki), her grandson Michael Jarvis (Stephanie), great-grandchildren Austin, Abigail, and Andrew Jarvis and several nieces and nephews.

She was a devoted wife and wonderful mother, always caring for her family and friends while juggling a twenty-year career with the Federal Highway Administration once her children were older. She did volunteer work for several organizations and played Bridge with her neighborhood club. She was an active member of River Road Church, Baptist since the 1950s, and spent her last twenty years making friends as a resident of Lakewood in Richmond, VA.

The family wishes to thank her caregivers at Lakewood for their love and attention over the last several years.

The funeral will take place Thursday, July 18, 2024 at 1 p.m. at Woody Funeral Home, 1771 N. Parham Road, Richmond, VA. Graveside service will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions may be made to:

River Road Church, Baptist Benevolent Fund.

8000 River Road.

Richmond, VA 23229.

Melissa and Lewis, your Mom and Dad both exemplified kindness as demonstrated by Christ. I saw their kindness both as a child and adult in their close involvement with the Church. I am sorry they are both now gone from this world and pray God blesses all of you all with vivid memories of your time together until you are reunited again.

She was my mother-in-law, a friend and my second mother. Besides my mother there was no one as sweet and kind as Judy. She was a true farm girl from Floyd, VA. I´ll miss our visit but I know you are with Bob now. We love you to the moon and back. Jerry

"Wherever a beautiful soul has been, there is a trail of beautiful memories." Jewell, I will miss you dearly. And will miss the connection with you and pleasure that our Saturday phone calls brought me.

Love, Ken McDanel
