Joan Goodstein Obituary

GOODSTEIN, Joan H., 88, died peacefully in her sleep December 22, 2022. Born in Baltimore, Md. and raised in the majestic mountains of Waynesboro, Va., she was the daughter of the late Estelle and Harry Hyman. She is now dancing again with her "Poochie," Joseph S. Goodstein, who preceded her in death in 2017. Joan, aka Mom, Bubbie and Aunt Joanie, is survived by her precious treasures: her children, Jeffrey Richard Goodstein (Cary), Mark David Goodstein (Ashley), Ronald Charles Goodstein and Renee Goodstein Solondz (Lenny); her wonderful grandchildren, Grayson, Lindsey (Sam), Alex, Chesley, Matthew, Madison and Justin; and her newest jewels, great-grandchildren Sawyer and Sutton. She reveled in the love of her family and believed that family was a matter of love and respect and not only blood – thus extending "her family" many times over. Her siblings, Judy, Weene, Fella and Sheila, were always by her side and provided her with many nieces, nephews and grands that she considered her own in her very special relationship with each of them. Joan had many friends and treasured her adventures with each. Joan never met an organization that she said no to in terms of offering her time, dedication and leadership. Her community work was endless and highlighted by her serving as the president of the Temple Beth-El (Richmond, Va.). Sisterhood, campaign chairwoman of the United Jewish Appeal (Women's Division), president of Jewish Family Services and president of the Women's Cabinet. She received numerous community awards and honors for this work. She was a strong, proud and active Jewish woman that fought for the rights of all people. She believed that everyone makes their own ripples in the water and that those ripples in turn affect those that they touch to do the same. Along with her husband of 62 years, they successfully owned and ran several retail ventures including ELJO'S, Pubs and The Tartan Shop in Richmond, and Zachary's in Norfolk. Joan was a true lady who had a penchant for fun and creativity. She was a poet, artist, speech and letter writer, even if she remained anonymous in these pursuits beyond her family and friends. Sleep well and be at peace, sweet lady, your ripples have touched so many. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, December 26, at Bliley's Funeral Home, 3801 Augusta Ave. Interment will follow at Richmond Beth-El Cemetery, 4000 Pilots Ln. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the charity of your choice.
