Joan Richardson - Gone but Not Forgotten

I don't normally use the word dope because of its other definitions, but Miss Joan Richardson,a beloved music teacher at Reid Elementary school was DOPE!She discovered my voice and was the first person to see my talent at a young age! She ran G.H Reid Elementary School when my sister and I went there as kids. When she spoke to calm down a bunch of loud and loquacious children, her bold, fierce tone summoned the respect, fear, and adherence of every man, woman, and child. All the problem kids loved her and were well behaved in her presence.

She wanted me to be in her choir so bad, and I did too.She would have me sing solo parts to songs in front of my classes and I felt so special! I even got to mirror her for a day which only kids who made good grades got to do! They would just be a teacher's helper all day and be a representative of them sort of speak..Looking back, I bet she requested me!Anyaways, when she retired, I remember my sister telling her that G.H.Reid would not be the same without her.I think she somewhat inspired me to get locs..Her's were long and beautiful and she would wear it in a colorful wrap sometimes!
She kept all the bad little boys in line, and would make them drummers in her African World Emsemble group that would awe crowds with singers, dancers, and drummers performing African dance, songs, and music during school assemblies and different performances in Richmond that gained notoriety from all cultures, peaked people's interest in African culture, and was something every kid of every race at G.H.Reid wanted to be apart of! The costumes of the children performers and their performances were spectacular and captivating! One would wonder how this remarkable woman could teach so many children to sing, dance, and play drums with such effortless skill, precision, and passion like she did all on her own! They were given African jewelry to perform in as well! It made any little brown girl or boy proud to be black! Those young black boys in my class who would play the drums or sing needed that and it helped to keep them out of trouble as Miss Richardson would instill manners, respect, and ambition in them and other children while taking them under her wing.

I was sad when she died. I look forward to hopefully seeing her come back on Earth when Jehovah resurrects the dead back to life so I can hug her and sing for her again!

Joan Emily Yvette Andrews, my freshman year roommate at Fisk University in Nashville, TN. We were both music majors and took French together, as well. For some reason, I thought of her today and decided to google FL Tallahassee Joan Andrews. I remember she dated a guy named Ivan Richardson, so I added Richardson to the search. It was a shock to find that she had passed. I was not surprised, however, to learn that Joan had become a music teacher who made a lasting impression on her students and all who knew her.
To Joan's daughter, Narquinta: love, peace, comfort and joy in having had such a special and vibrant mother.

Narquinta, It was indeed sadness the morning I read about your mother in the Richmond paper. I met Joan by way of selling her the Jeep 4door wrangler a few years ago and it was indeed a "trip" working with her!

I will always remember Joan picking me up to take a ride in her new wrangler with the top down listening to her gospel cd's.

Joan was more than a customer, she was my friend and I will look forward in seeing her again.

Peace be with you.

Ms. Richardson was my music teacher at G. H. Reid Elementary School. There are very few things about my childhood I remember, but this I do know - she was the best teacher any child could ever have! I can almost hear her many bangles she wore on her wrists ringing as she instructed us in song and dance!

It was her who stirred up my excitement and appreciation for the arts, music and dance. She will truly be missed!

Joan;
You always apologized for not being the big cousin when I visited over summers from NY. I never did mind because the time spent with Aunt Ann and Uncle Andrews were always so much fun as well. When you did find the time we had lots of fun. It was so very nice to see you when we all got together for the family reunion in Philadelphia some ten years ago. May you rest in peace.

Mrs. Richardson is my friend and my teacher. From the moment our paths crossed, she taught me how to be a better parent by the simpliest things. Two of which are happiness and time. I'll never forget these important teachings. I watched and learned as she showed a child what delights her and she found the child's delight added to her own. This is happiness and her lifestyle proved what children need more than anything else is your time. This is how you grow a child up into a strong adult and I witnessed her turn many a child who needed it. By example, I/we witnessed her build a family of friends and I/we witnessed her strengthen a community by use of a tool she invented called 'The World Ensemble." By example, she reinforced that old adage, 'it is better to give than it is to recieve.' Because you, Joan Richardson, have given to me/us so much, I/we will always remember you through your teachings as well as your songs and dances. I Love You and I know you are gonna be alright. Peace my sista! Ricky Williams

Joan I love you & I will never forget you.
You were a person that always heard a different drum, dance to a different beat, always saw things a different way, and walked your own path. It's just a Joan Andrews Richardson thing. So b/c I know you I have some do's & don'ts to tell you.
Joan don't roll up in heaven & double park the Jeep in front of the Pearlie Gates.
Joan when you meet the Lord, don't ask the Lord was he sure about the timing and then give him the Joan A. Richardson question Look!!
Joan please get a pair of wings that you can get in & out of. We will recognize your wings trimmed in Kente & Mud cloth.
Joan please ask for a permanent necklace for your keys & your whistle. Please keep them around your neck.
Joan as you train the children in heaven, please do not throw or hit them with your shoe.
Joan I know I will see you again. A spirit like yours have to live on!! We will always keep you alive in our memories.
Joan please know I & my family Ricky, Derrick, Cymone & Marsias love you and enjoyed all of our times & experiences with you.
Narquinta thank you for sharing your "MOM" with us, because we thoroughly enjoyed her.
Peace, Much Love, Many Blessing. I'm so glad our paths crossed.

You know for the longest time I never knew your name and it didn't matter because there was something so dynamic about you and that was your SMILE!. I always said that you had a testimony for the church, but you left the testimony with all of us whose lives you touched. I will miss you dearly, but you taught us all that we can fight the good fight of faith, if we just keep pressing towards Jesus. The love that you unselfishly gave to all that knew you will forever be a testimony for years to come. Thank you Miss Joan for the love of Christ that you never stopped showing. To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.

Ms. Richardson If there was a song I would sing it would be simply the best!!! You were the one who seen the light in all your kids who walked through the doors of an RPS. You will forever be missed. I remember when I was in training at my job and I heard your voice it was so great. Thank you for keeping me entertained on them boring days at the bank. As a child you were a mother, friend, and so much more to me. Being in the World Ensemble taught me so much as a child that when I became and adult I took all I learned with me. You are a great mentor and inspiration. I wish more children could have went through you program and got the guidance that you gave to so many of us. I will miss you dearly as well as others. You are so loved... There will only be one Ms. Joan A. Richardson.

Joan Richardson wore out her physical body and MANY vehicles trying to serve mankind - especially the children. I remember so many days when she packed her vehicle with lots of food, love and children. I remember how unselfishly she gave of herself.....how she always tried to help EVERYONE. Jesus reserved a special place for Joan and Michael....they left us on the same day because God wants them to produce and promote the ETERNAL ENSEMBLE. Rest in Peace Joan........YOU ARE LOVED.

P.S. Your children demonstrated their love and respect by showing up at the celebration of your life today at Faith Landmark. They did you proud! They are true symbols of your hard work and dedication. And as always, Deanie was there to assist! Love you Joan!

In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

Ms. Richardson was one of the most beautiful people that I have ever met. She was not only a teacher, but a mother and a friend to many. I have seen how she had an impact on my life and so many others in the G. H. Reid school family. Everything she did was from the heart even down to fussing about getting the songs and dances right. She was the best and will be greatly missed.

You will forever be in our hearts.

The lost of a teacher and close family friend saddens my heart. My mother and Ms. Richardson have worked together for almost 16 years, she was the one and only music teacher i know at Reid. There is not one child at Reid that Ms. Richardson could say she didn't know, the majority of the students either you had her class, helped her after school, was in world ensemble, or got snatched up a couple of times.... She was the second mother to many and always there when you needed her. I love her dearly and will never forget how she impacted my life, she will be truly missed

Ms. Richardson will be GREATLY missed. She's probably the person I have to credit for kickstarting my love for music. Being in the World Ensemble and getting to know her and interacting with her on a daily basis was one of the absolute BEST experiences of my life, and I'll never forget it. To this day, I still have video tapes of her at some of our performances. She was truly the best. I'm very sad to hear that she's passed, but I know she's in a better place.

God has called one of his angels home. Mrs. Richardson was truly a blessing to know. She is one of those teachers that we hear about but only a few will ever get to know. Mrs. Richardson was an inspiration to all that knew her in the classroom or outside. When she had to leave Reid School the kids were so sad because they knew they had someone who cared about them as a person first and a student secondly. My daughter was fortunate to know Mrs. Richardson and truly loved her music class. My most fond memories of Mrs. Richardson were the PTA programs when she would have the kids decked out in costumes that she would make even when she was getting to the point where it was a little to much for her due to her illness. Mrs. Richrdson you will truly be missed take your well deserve rest and to GOD be the glory.

Ms. Richardson (sigh), We love you sooooo much and we will miss you dearly. June 25th was a very sad day for us but we know you will continue as you always have to watch over us and make sure we are okay. She was more than a loving friend to everyone....She was family and to most of us our other mother. She got to do something that was a long time dream for me, and that was to teach my kids. I told her I would have a singer, a dancer and a drummer and if god didnt put it into play lol. She raised most of us and molded us to be the bright, strong, independent and motivated individuals that we are today and I can't thank you enough for just that alone. She use to work with my grandmother Carolyn Years ago at the telephone company and then years afterwards I met her in 3rd grade at J. L. Francis then followed her to G.H. Reid....and I guess I never left her lol. She has taught so many of my family members and no matter how long you have seen her, " She never forgot her babies!" There is nothing like having to say goodbye to the ones you love. The best thing that we can do is remember the great qualities of that person and the experiences that we shared with them. Some of my greatest memories of Ms.Richardson are of her not allowing any child to be left behind after school, when other adults would look at the children and just turn their heads. She would pile all the children into her famous red jeep and take them home, no matter how far and in the opposite direction it took her from where she needed to go. Ms. Richardson also refused to let people in need go without. I fondly remeber her always going into her pocket to buy children lunch when they forgot their lunch money or when their parents just simply could not afford it. She did this out of the kindness of her heart because she knew that most of the times she would not get that money back. She knew that being selfless and doing good things for others may not have a monetary payback, but we all knew that her payback was coming in the after life. Ms. Richardson was a mother, friend, and a guidance counselor to all and this is how I choose to remember her. I am still saddened by this loss; but I know she is still making life a little bit more bearable for those elsewhere. She will be greatly missed.

I am so thankful that God placed Ms. Richardson in my life. As a teacher, mentor and mother figure, Ms. Richardson had such a powerful impact over myself and many others. Words can not express the pain I feel right now, however I know that you are resting peacefully. Your encouraging words and unselfish spirit, I will always carry with me. You will truly, truly be missed but never forgotten. Love you always.

Joan will always be remembered not only as a great music teacher, but moreover as a caring, giving lady who gave each child her heart. She was dedicated to students, parents and to her colleagues. She lifted the spirits of all who came in contact with her. She made magnificent dancers and drummers of students who in turn performed to the delight of many audiences. She used every opportunity to teach and to impart wisdom. Joan will be greatly missed, but her magnanimous spirit will live on through her students.

To my Mother, My Friend, and My Inspiration:
You were one of the GREATEST WOMEN that GOD could have put on this earth. I remember when i joined the WORLD ENSEMBLE, it was the best experience ever. It was like a family, you as a Mother, and the rest of the group were my brothers and sisters, regardless of nationality. You have been there for me when I thought the world turned its back on me. You were like a Modern day "Madea" in my eyes!!! You said what you wanted and you always spoke wisdom, you have helped so many of us grow and become the successful individuals that we are today. If it wasn't for you, your strict but gentle ways and the group/family that you created, who knows where most of us wouldve ended up..My memories are all good ones from the performances in G.H. Reid all the way to Yorktown!!! I will always remember you in my heart and soul...I LOVE YOU!!!!! You will be missed but NEVER FORGOTTEN!!!!

Joan was a friend, a mother figure, a spiritual advisor and much much more to me and my daughter. She will be deeply missed, but will live on in our hearts forever.

"God saw you getting tired,
And when a cure was not to be.
He wrapped his arms around you,
And whispered," Come Home To Me".
You didn't deserve
What you went through,
So He gave you rest.
God's garden must be so beautiful,
He only takes the best".

Love You Forever!!!!

Mrs. Richardson..Was a wonderful, down to earth, tell it like it is woman. I've known this strong and talented woman since I was a student at G.H Reid. She was a wonderful music teacher; I look forward to going to school just to see her. I was very blessed to have been a part of her choir, it was a joy to be around her and work with her. She can never be replaced, or forgotten. She was a fighter and I know she fought to the end...You can rest now...

Well there is a lot that I could say about Ms. Richardson but there is not enough space to put it all. I can remember when you first put together the World Ensemble at G.H. Reid. You took on the responsibility (with ease) to teach us about different cultures and ways of life that some of us would have never taken interest in at the age we were at that time. You were not only a teacher to us but you were a role model and a mom away from home. Even though you have been called up to your final resting place we know that your spirit will always be here with us. Heaven just received a wonderful woman!!
I love you and you will be missed dearly.

To an AMAZING WOMAN,
You have been an inspiration to so many. You have touched so many lives in ways unspoken. You are truly the definition of a "strong" and "phenomenal" woman that all of us to desire to be. I'm very gratefuly to have had the chance to have you in my life. Even though God has called you home, the impression that you've left on our lives will last forever. The loss of this very special, loving woman, teacher, friend, mentor, and mother,to many, including myself has left a deap gash in my heart. Ms. Joan Richardson was with me from the day I stepped foot into Reid Elementary and guided me through so many trials, that I chose to go wrong, but she made me go right.I was a member of the World Ensemble until she tired of the duties needed to maintain the group. Although she had students who could run the group it would never be like her teaching and instructing us. Ms. Richardson was a great person, a person who had the sight to see potential in a person who could not see it in their self and would push them until they could recognize their potential. She was hard on certain individuals such as myself, not because my mother gave her permission lol, but because she cared and she hated to see a person drag them self to destruction. Ms. Richardson was a person that I loved dearly and will never forget, a person that I can call my mother because she was there each and every time I needed her. But to sum this all out I luv u Ms. Richardson and believe me when I say this, you will truly be missed.

Words cannot express how much I will miss this wonderful woman who has truly touched my life. Even until the end of her battle, she has been a constant source of inspiration, showing a face of courage and faith. Ms. Richardson was my mentor, mother, counselor, spiritual advisor-- a most trusted and admired friend who can never be replaced. She lived her life freely by spreading her love and wisdom to the children who were so blessed to be in her presence. And though my heart greives because she is gone, I will forever cherish her spirit--as it will forever be a part of me.

Joan was my colleague for almost 30 years at G.H.Reid. My life was vastly richer for having known her. There was no one in this world who had a kinder heart, better disposition, greater sense of humor, more generosity than Joan. There was no one like her, she was truly one of a kind. Her greatest legacy are all the young people that she loved and counseled. I know that they will never forget her, none who knew her will ever forget her.
