John Funkhouser Obituary

FUNKHOUSER, John Jeremiah, died November 18, 2023 in Falmouth, MA. He was born on July 1, 1937 in Indianapolis, Indiana, the eldest son of Dr. James B., and Gene S. Funkhouser. John's family moved to Virginia in 1938. He attended Westhampton School and Saint Christopher's High School, excelling as a scholar and athlete, and was captain of the tennis team. He received a scholarship to Yale University where he was an English Literature major and a member of the Elizabethan Club. He sang with the Yale Alley Cats as well as the Yale Glee Club. He attended University of Virginia Medical School. He married Avery Thompson, from Buffalo, New York, in 1963. He was a ship's doctor on the USS Oglethorpe in the Mediterranean Sea, and later served at Oceana Naval Air Station and Portsmouth Naval Hospital. The family relocated to Massachusetts in 1972, where he practiced urology at Jordan Hospital and Falmouth Hospital until he retired in 2009. John played classical piano throughout his life, and as a member of the Yale Alumni Chorus, he sang in concerts at Carnegie Hall and participated in two overseas tours, which included concerts at The Kremlin and St. Paul's Cathedral in London. He participated in a local chorus, and theatrical arts. He enjoyed gardening, golfing, stamp and coin collecting, and birdwatching. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of fifty years, Avery, and his sister Alice Flowers. He is survived by his children Christopher, Stewart and Margaret, his sister Laura Ruml, and four grandchildren.
