John Gonzales Obituary

GONZALES, John Richard, June 6, 1953 to October 31, 2021. It is with profound sadness that we announce the unexpected and untimely passing of John Richard Gonzales of Williamsburg, Va. John was born in Washington, D.C. in 1953, to Donald J. and Mary Tolhurst Gonzales, the youngest of four children. He graduated from Christchurch School with a soccer scholarship to Hope College in Holland, Mich. His academic career at Hope College was brief, losing its luster at the close of soccer season and the first semester. John took a job as a dishwasher at a small restaurant while he tried to puzzle out his future. When the cook failed to show up for his shift, John received his first promotion and was unwittingly launched on a path he blazed to an impressive career. Many of us have listened to John tell the tale of his culinary journey, engaging us with the colorful stories that peppered his life. Our brief re-telling here, lean and impoverished by the absence of his resonant voice and ebullient charm, only hints at the man that touched the lives of so many. John won an apprenticeship with the five-star Williamsburg Inn; graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York; Executive Chef of the Jockey Club restaurant at the Ritz Carlton - Fairfax Hotel; Executive Chef of the Watergate Hotel in Washington, D.C.; co-owner and Executive Chef of the Deer Park Inn fine dining restaurant / bed and breakfast in Maryland; Executive Chef of the Colonial Williamsburg Taverns; Corporate Executive Chef of Virginia Foodservice Group; Corporate Executive Chef of Performance Foodservice Group; Food and Beverage Consultant; cookbook author; and co-owner and Executive Chef of A Chef's Kitchen, which became not only the perfect venue to showcase John's accumulated culinary knowledge and skills, but so much more as well. John was an excellent teacher. He created clearly written and delicious recipes - that worked! He was able to make food science and culinary technique understandable in a way that encouraged even novices to get in the kitchen and start cooking. He took the time to patiently answer every question directed to him until his answer was fully understood. John was passionate. He was fully invested in whatever he was doing and his passion was infectious. An enthusiastic amateur musician, John played the harmonica, guitar, drums and keyboards in a local band with cherished friends. John had a natural manner about him that drew everyone in and created real personal connections throughout his lifetime, making each of us feel important to him. That was the overarching characteristic that permeated every aspect of his life. He was a genuine force of nature, standing out amongst those we meet as one of the "Unforgettables." John was predeceased by his parents; his sister, Nancy Gonzales Turner; and his niece, Shelly Nicole Turner. John is survived by his three children, Isaac Mitchell (Johanna Champagne), William Hamilton, Annabelle Jean; grandson, Mads Joseph; his wife, Wanda Kaye; sisters, Cheryl Gonzales Yancey and Barbara Gonzales Burnett; nieces and nephews and a very wide circle of extended family, friends and associates. His premature death has shaken us to our core and he is deeply, achingly missed. Rest in peace, beloved Johnny, peerless in our esteem. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to the Interlochen Center for the Arts (please note "In memory of John R. Gonzales") at Interlochen Center for the Arts, P.O. I was born in 1953 as well. I turned 70 this year and on that day my mind traveled back to my days at the CIA. I loved John. The loss stays with you when loved ones are taken before their time. My best to you. all

I am retiring as a Culinary Arts Instructor in Vermont for the past 25 years. When John and I graduated from the CIA in 1977 we were clear believers that the world was our oyster. I miss him and our infrequent contact and wish all that know him well.

John was a friend! We looked forward to sharing stories with him and cherished each episode. Williamsburg has lost an icon and an extraordinary man. And, as a chef, teacher and mentor he will forever be remembered for his smile and wit. To the Hill family he was an essential ingredient in what made Williamsburg a great "living history"destination.

I just learned from a CIA acquaintance of the passing of Johnny boy. We started at the CIA at the same time in the summer of 1976. We had so much in common and managed to stay connected for a few years. I get how gut-wrenching this loss must be. I am from Vermont and would enjoy a conversation to share fond/food memories with anyone interested. I am currently a Chef instructor at the Hannaford Career Center in Middlebury VT. It seems as though we still had a lot in common. My best to you all. Woody Danforth 992 West Shore Road Salisbury Vermont 05769 mobile phone 802 771 7044

I was one of John's classmates at CCS and soccer teammate. As I never saw him again after graduation he will forever be remembered by me as a hard driving but good sportsman on the field and off. With long hair and big smile he was always someone you enjoyed being around. I'm sure he is sorely missed and I wish his family my sincerest condolences in his passing.

Peter and I were shocked and saddened by John´s passing. We join in everyone´s grief. John was a kind man as well as a talented Chef. We were always impressed by his food, his "classes" that were educational and fun, and the way he taught and showcased his talented young staff of cooks and kitchen helpers. John Gonzalez, an institution in Williamsburg, will be sadly missed. Rest in blessed peace, dearest John.

While Chef John´s list of achievements is impressive, just as important was the way his charm, wit and humor would instantly capture your heart. His presentations, information and light hearted manner made your entire experience unforgettable. He loved music and his stunning harmonica rendition of "Thunder Road" on one evening is still fresh in my mind. John will be missed personally by many and by the entire Williamsburg community he touched.

We were profoundly saddened to learn of the untimely death of Chef John. We made it a point to go to "A Chef's Kitchen" at least once a year since 2013. We travel to Virginia from Philadelphia, PA. We went not only for the fabulous food but to enjoy the kindness, humor and expertise of Chef John. I learned so much from him. We will miss him forever. We send our respect and condolences to Chef John's family. God bless Chef John and may your memories of him give you comfort through these difficult days.

Melanie and I send our deepest, most heartfelt condolences to John's family and friends, and to those we cherish in his A Chef's Kitchen family. We found A Chef's Kitchen by chance a little more than a decade ago, when Melanie asked for a cooking class for her birthday, and it immediately became our absolute favorite thing to do. We will miss him dearly. Chef John, thank you SO much for all the wonderful times we had at dinner with you, and may you rest in peace.

I first knew you in my music class at Matthew Whaley in 1962. You were wonderful then and that continued. I loved Chef's Kitchen. Because of you, I met your family and became friends with Mary and Don. You will be greatly missed, especially by me.
