John Griffin Obituary
August 8, 1934 - July 8, 2024
John Francis "Jack" Griffin, 89, longtime resident of Richmond, died peacefully on July 8, 2024, in Fairfax, VA. John was born in New York City on August 8, 1934, to the late James and Mary Griffin. Jack was preceded in death by his beloved son, Neil; and wife, Mary. He is survived by his children, Sean Griffin (Carolyn), Jennifer McDowell (Robert), Carleen Griffin, and David Griffin (Tracy); his grandchildren, John Griffin (Nora), Jillian Morrison (William), Jake Griffin, Griffin McDowell, Mary-Shea McDowell, Cormac McDowell, Riordan Griffin, and Donovan Griffin; and his great-granddaughter, Hollis Griffin. John grew up in New York City and graduated from Rice High School in 1952. He then attended Iona College where he earned a degree in business in 1958, before completing a second degree in mechanical engineering at The Cooper Union in 1972. Jack worked in the nuclear power plant sector for many years with both American Electric Power and Virginia Electric Power Co. (VEPCO). He then had the opportunity to couple his lifelong love of trains with his engineering career by joining the Maryland Transit Administration's project to build the Baltimore Light Rail system. Jack served in the National Guard of New York, the famous "Fighting 69th," and often enjoyed marching with the regiment in the St. Patrick's Day parade in NYC. Jack was a gregarious storyteller and a lover of all things Irish, especially Irish music. He was a proud member of the Major James H. Dooley Division of the Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH).
A visitation will be held at Bliley's Funeral Home, 3801 Augusta Ave, Richmond, VA, 23230, on Thursday, July 18, 2024, from 5 to 7 p.m., with the reciting of the Rosary at 6:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 9505 Gayton Rd, Richmond, VA, 23229, on Friday, July 19, 2024, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the AOH Major James H. Dooley Division, 4491 Springfield Rd, Glen Allen, VA, 23060.
