John Hughes Obituary

John Reed Hughes

September 30, 1954 - December 4, 2024

John Reed Hughes was welcomed into heaven on December 4, 2024, after a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. John was born on September 30, 1954, in Ft. Leavenworth, KS. He called himself an "Army brat," having lived in Kansas, Germany, and Hawaii, before arriving in Virginia, and calling Hampton his home. He followed his high school sweetheart to the University of Richmond, where he graduated from the Robins School of Business. After a year in Fredericksburg, he returned to the Richmond area and raised a family. He worked as a purchasing agent and manager for several Richmond companies before retirement.

He was a member of Richmond's First Baptist Church, where he taught preschool and children's Sunday school. He loved his church family dearly. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Susan; his children, David Reed Hughes and Ellen Hughes Painter (Kip), all of Richmond; his brother, Dan of Texas; and four grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church on Saturday, December 21, at 1 p.m. Memorial gifts may be made to First Baptist Church, 2709 Monument Ave., Richmond, Va. 23220.

My deepest sympathy to Susan and family for the loss of John. I just found out the sad news. John and I were close friends at BSJHS and KHS in Hampton. We also worked together for 2 summers at Pembroke Construction where we experienced many humorous moments. I went off to Texas A&M followed by flying for the U.S. Navy and then a career with Delta Airlines. I last saw John at our 10 year KHS reunion. John was a great guy and was always smiling. My deepest sympathy.
May I share a famous Greek proverb: No man ever really dies as long as someone in the living world remembers him with fond recall; He has simply gone on.

Many good memories of the college days at Richmond of John. He was one of the nicest people you would ever meet. We were pika fraternity brothers. Condolences to you, Susan and the rest of your family. He will be missed. Rest in peace, my friend and brother.

So sorry to hear about this. John was a great friend and fraternity brother at the University of Richmond and was one of my favorite human beings.

I had not seen John much since graduation but I will always remember his mellow demeanor, sense of humor and huge smile. Heaven's Hardbyball team must have needed someone to run the end across.

RIP, my friend. Susan, sorry for your loss and to John's children, he was a wonderful human being.

So sorry to hear this. Joh was a great, great friend and fraternity brother at the University of Richmond and a super teammate of mine on numerous fraternity sports teams.

I had not seen "Shoes" often since graduation but will never forget his gentle manner, sense of humor and smile. I guess heaven must have needed someone to run the end across in Hardyball games up there.

Susan I am so sorry for your loss. I remember how great it was to hear John answer the phone when I called for material that I needed for a job asap. I always knew John would come through and he always did it with a smile in his voice. It was a pleasure to work with him and to later meet him in person. I was so surprised when we both realized he was married to my cousin. You and your family are in my prayers.
