John Ulrich "Jack" Schwarzmann III

1929 - 2021

SCHWARZMANN, John Ulrich "Jack", III, passed away at age 91 on April 12, 2021. He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Wanda Lee Gates Schwarzmann. Survivors include his daughter, Fran Reese of Richmond, Va.; and his son, John Schwarzmann (Sharon) of Richmond, Va.; grandchildren, Margaret Anne Schwarzmann of Richmond, Va. and John Gates Schwarzmann of Arlington, Va.; sisters-in-law, Cordelia Gates (Bob) of Frisco, Texas and Barbara Phlegar (Archie) of Blacksburg, Va.; and many treasured nieces.

A native of Arlington, Va., Jack was born June 27, 1929, the son of the late Dr. John Schwarzmann and Mary Fannie Neitzey. His grandmother proclaimed him "God's Perfect Child." He attended Washington-Lee High School and was MVP on their championship football team. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict stationed at Fort McNair. He attended Virginia Tech on the GI Bill and earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Jack and Wanda were married shortly after his graduation.

Jack was employed at the DuPont Spruance Plant in Richmond, Va. for 35 years. While working for DuPont, he assisted in the start-up of several DuPont factories in Europe. He made many lifelong friends while working for DuPont.

Jack was a devoted father, grandfather and friend to many. He was happiest when spending time with his family. He was known as a handyman, who would tackle any project for friends and family.

After retiring from DuPont, he took up woodworking and sold his goods at craft shows. He enjoyed playing tennis and working out with his friends at ACAC. He loved to visit his cousins in Asheville, N.C. to fish and help on the farm. Jack was easygoing and cheerful with a sneaky (but sweet) wit that brought delight to all.

A private family graveside service will be held at Westview Cemetery, Blacksburg, Va.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Nature Conservancy of Virginia or the Chesapeake Bay Foundation.
