Joyce Mitchell Obituary

Joyce Hall Mitchell

December 24, 1934 - December 12, 2024

Joyce Hall Mitchell, 89, of Hanover County, passed away peacefully at home on December 12, 2024. Born December 24, 1934, she was a graduate of Henry Clay High School, Class of 1952, and continued her education at the University of Richmond and UVA. She retired from SunTrust Bank where she served the community as Branch Manager. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, James "Weldon" Mitchell; her parents, Myrle and Minnie Lee Hall; her brothers, Ronald and Winfred Hall; and brother-in-law, R.D. Nuckols. Left to cherish her memory are her three children, Emma Lee Mitchell Melton (Mark), J.W. Mitchell (Charlene) and Sherry Mitchell Tingler (Wayne); her five granddaughters, Lindsey Tingler Cooper (A.C.), Allison Tingler Stanley (James Douglas), Emma Mitchell, Paige Mitchell Grindstaff (Grant), Charlotte Mitchell; and her great-granddaughter, Sadie Kay Cooper; her sisters, Marilyn "Molly" Nuckols and Donna Hall Graves (Wes); her brother, Bruce Hall (Jackie); and sister-in-law, Mary Lee Hall.

She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and well known as a hard worker. She lovingly prepared lunch after church every Sunday for her family to be together and celebrated every milestone and important event in their lives. She was a strong Christian who left a legacy of service and commitment to her Church and community. She was an active member, Deacon, Sunday School teacher, and Flower Committee member at Taylorsville Baptist Church, member of the Doswell Ruritan Club and member of Doswell Fire Company. She loved sports, playing softball and basketball as a young lady, and later the number one fan and scorekeeper for "The Bank" Girls' Softball Team. Later in life, she was found watching her children and grandchildren playing sports and rarely missed a game. She also enjoyed spending time working in her garden and flowerbeds. Joyce and Weldon were known for their kindness and generosity throughout the community. They opened their home to anyone in need, delivered vegetables to friends and neighbors, and always had a list of projects to work on together.

Interment private. Memorial contributions may be made to the Cemetery Fund of Taylorsville Baptist Church, PO Box 129, Doswell, VA 23047.

I am so sorry to hear of Joyce's passing. She was one of the kindest most caring people I've ever known. She was always thinking of others in need, loving her family, contributing to her community. As sad as this is and as much as she will be missed, she leaves a mark, especially on her family, but also on all the lives she touched of how to live life the right way. My heartfelt condolences to her family. Be proud, she was a special person, someone I will always feel fortunate to say was my friend.

So sorry for your great loss. I was one of the ones they opened their home to and I'll always fondly remember my time there living in their basement. Joyce and Weldon were such a wonderful example of people living out their faith in tangible ways. Cherish your memories and the great blessing of being brought up by such a godly couple. May the peace of our Lord Jesus comfort all of you.

So sorry for your lost Emma. Never got to know your mother very well. Mostly at the softball games at Doswell School and the bank. But she was always friendly and kind to me. She will certainly be missed around Doswell.

First met Mrs. Mitchell in 1979 when I first moved to Va. She was with Sun Trust in Doswell at the time and helped me a lot. One of the finest and real people that I met while living in Va. My deepest sympathies to her family.
