Julian Fowlkes Obituary

FOWLKES, Julian Graham Sr., 81, of Burkeville, Va., passed away on November 29, 2007 at his home in Burkeville, Va. Born September 27, 1926 to the late James H. and Mabel E. Fowlkes. He was a Rural Letter Carrier in Burkeville, Kenbridge and Crewe, retiring in 1989 after 44 years of faithful service. He was a member of Burkeville Baptist Church where he served as deacon for 46 years, as a church clerk, and numerous other capacities in the church. He was past vice-mayor of Burkeville and served on the Town Council for ten years, chairman of Piedmont Planning District and member for twenty years, past member and chairman of Nottoway Economic Development Commission, a member of Burkeville Ruritan Club and a member of VFW Post #9815 in Crewe, Va. He served in the U.S. Army 88th Division Army of Occupation, in Italy, following WWII. He was always interested in all sports and a strong supporter of Virginia Tech. He is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Shirley; his three sons and one daughter, Edwin N. Fowlkes, of Tazewell, Va., Judith F. Rice (Keith) of Clinton, Tenn., J. Graham Fowlkes Jr. (Suzanne), of Evington, Va., James Alan Fowlkes of Chesterfield, Va.; three grandchildren, J. Hollis Rice of Clinton, Tenn., Nancy M. Fowlkes of Bluefield, Va., and Meghan E. Fowlkes of Evington, Va.; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, James W. (Charlean), Eugene L. and Robert E. (Jean) Fowlkes, all of Burkeville, Va.; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, December 2, 2007 at the Burkeville Baptist Church, 222 S. Agnew Street, Burkeville, Va. at 2:30 p.m. with interment at Trinity Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Rice, Va. Family will receive friends at home or at Jennings-McMillian Funeral Home, Crewe, Va. on Saturday, December 1, 2007 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The family suggest memorial donations be made to Burkeville Baptist Church Building Fund, c/o Church Financial Secretary, P.O. Box 325, Burkeville, Va. 23922, Burkeville Fire Dept. and First Responder, Burkeville, Va., or to the charity of your choice.

Dear Shirley,

Lou called us and told us of Julian's death. Our prayers are with you and your family. Alice and I plan to stop by Farmville and pick up Lou and Travis on our way to the funeral.
