Katherine (Kitty) Carter Nelson, age 84, passed away on October 18, 2024, in Richmond, Virginia. Born on June 13, 1940, Kitty was a beacon of kindness and generosity, cherished by all who knew her. Kitty dedicated her life to her family and community. As a teenager and young woman, she loved horseback riding; and even had her own horse. Later, Kitty became an avid tennis player. She was a devoted homemaker, deeply involved in various social and charitable activities. She was an active member of the Woman's Club Richmond. As the Co-Founder and President of the Hanover Humane Society, she showed immense care for animals and worked tirelessly to better their lives.Educated at The Potomac School, Holton-Arms School, St. Catherine's School, and Sweetbriar College, Kitty's kindness, bright intellect, and cheerful nature left a lasting impression on all she touched. She was interested in the people she met and was eager to help those in need.Katherine leaves behind a loving family: her husband, Neill G. Nelson; a brother, Dr. Hill Carter, Jr. and his wife Diana; a sister, Mary Devereux Carter; son, Joseph Judson Smith, IV, daughter Christy Macomber and her husband Dana; and her cherished grandchildren, Mary Katherine Carter Smith, Joseph Judson Smith, V, Elizabeth Devereux Stokely Smith, and Marguerite Crenshaw Smith. She is also survived by cousins Ted Merry and Gloria Walker. Kitty was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Hill Carter, Sr. and his wife Devereux.A service celebrating Kitty's life will be held at Westminster Canterbury Richmond, with the date to be announced. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Hanover Humane Society, honoring Katherine's commitment to animal welfare.

Sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Kitty Nelson. She will be missed!
Kitty was beautiful in looks, personality, demeanor, and spirit. I met her about twenty years ago via tennis, when I joined the group of women with whom she played. Kitty was a very good player! She was so graceful on the tennis court, moving about the court as a ballerina would move about the stage. She was a kind and generous person. We talked about our dogs and cats. It was Kitty who recommended an excellent veterinary practice to me. When one of my little dogs, a fourteen year old, passed away, it was the empathetic Kitty, via her connections with a dog rescuer, who helped me find a companion for my remaining little dog. I happily adopted that little poodle mix. That sweet girl, reminded me daily of Kitty who had led me to her. For thirteen years I silently thanked Kitty for that sweet pup who passed away a three years ago at the age of seventeen. Katherine Nelson will be missed by many! Rest in peace, Kitty.

Kitty was part of our lunch group for a while and it was nice to reunite with her.She was very caring and considerate.
