Lilian Slaughter Obituary

SLAUGHTER Lilian Hinton Slaughter, 87, of Reedville, passed away on August 14, 2006. She left gently from her home on Main Street where she was born and joyously lived her life. Lilian was the granddaughter of Elijah Reed, for whom her hometown was named. She grew up with her parents, John R. and Elizabeth Reed Hinton, in the three story Queen Anne style house built by her grandfather, George N. Reed. Lilian attended primary school in Reedville, then completed high school at Stuart Hall in Staunton nurturing her interest in art. She attended college at Edgewood Park in Briarcliff Manor in New York, majoring in art and interior design. After completing her studies, she lived briefly in Richmond before returning to her childhood home. Lilian loved Reedville, her heritage and family home, dutifully attending to all. She was a passionate gardener, expressing her artistic talents with flowers. She was a life member of the Garden Club of the Northern Neck/GCV. She enthusiastically supported the Club's mission of historic preservation and conservation, opening her home for the Historic Garden Tour several times. Her special interest in roses led her to chair the Club's Rose Committee. She was also a founding contributor to the Reedville Fisherman's Museum and Board Member Emeritus. Her family introduced her to Bethany United Methodist Church where she remained a life long member. Lilian was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 57 years, Buck, with whom she partnered in the family business of Blundon and Hinton, Incorporated and B & L Farms. Along with her artistic eye, Lilian had a keen business sense upon which Buck relied in all his endeavors. Lilian is survived by her adoring children, Elizabeth W. Nuckols of Richmond, Jude and Tom Kelly of Virginia Beach and W. Taylor Slaughter of Waterloo Farm; and grandchildren, Virginia Reed Kelly, Elizabeth Brooke Kelly and Mathew J. Slaughter. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, August 18, 2006 at Bethany United Methodist Church in Reedville. The family will receive visitors at the church from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, August 17. Lilian will be dearly missed by her loving caregivers, Linda Cleckly, Reneen Robinson, Wanda Cockrell, Helen Holden, Patricia Dorsey, Deneen Smith, Eugene Churchill and Carol Haynie. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Bethany United Methodist Church, Reedville Fisherman's Museum or Northumberland Rescue Squad. Faulkner Family Funeral Home & Crematory, Burgess, Va. is handling the arrangements.
