1935 - 2021

SAMUEL, Mrs. Lillian Ruth, age 85, passed away peacefully, at home, surrounded by family on January 19, 2021. She was born April 28, 1935, in Callao, Virginia, to the late Lillian and Lewis Blackwell. Lillian was preceded in death by her loving husband, Reverend Doctor Lawrence B. Samuel. Left to cherish her memory are her children, Sheila Ray, Thaddeus Van (Bonnie), Lawrence Jr. and Anita Chevelle; five grandchildren, Lawrence III (Tequila), James, Jason, Tyrone (Cierra) and Ariana; four great-grandchildren, TyLiyah, Lawrence, Lauryn and Ty; brother, Lewis "Bubbie" Blackwell (Ann); sister, Gladys Dates; adopted son, Jackie Brown; Sylvia Samuel; a host of nieces, nephews; and best friends, Tina Green and Jeanette Hales. Lillian was a graduate of Virginia State University, where she received her Bachelor of Science and master's degrees in Math. After graduation, she was an educator at Thompson Middle School and she was named "Teacher of the Year" for Richmond Public Schools in 1980. Lillian also taught at Virginia State University and served on various committees. Remains rest at Barry O. Waddy Funeral Home, 14476 Northumberland Hwy., Burgess, Va. 22432, where viewing will be held Wednesday, January 27, from 1 to 3 p.m. A Thursday, January 28, viewing will be at Second Baptist Church, 3300 Broad Rock Blvd., 23224 from 10:45 to 11:45 a.m. Private service will be held thereafter at 12 p.m. with live streaming available.
