LTC Sones Obituary

LTC Vaughn Maurice Sones

LTC Vaughn Maurice Sones, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, has gone home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Born in Bogalusa, La., he served his nation as a decorated Army officer for 28 years.

Vaughn is survived by his four children, Richard Sones (wife, Penny), Tracy Sones Holcomb (husband, Mark), Ronald Sones (wife, Mary), and Kathryn Sones Cox. He rejoiced in the birth of eight grandchildren, Michael, Erin, Abigail, Joshua, Daniel, Benjamin, and David; and 12 (to-date) great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his beloved and loving wife of 68 years, Helen; grandson, Jesse Holcomb; and son-in-law, Hagan Cox.

Vaughn enlisted in the U.S. Army as a young man, serving eight years before graduating from Officer's Career School. He served an additional 20 years, eventually retiring as Lieutenant Colonel in the Signal Corps. During his service, Vaughn was deployed to Vietnam during the war and was also stationed in Taiwan, Guam, and Germany. He earned multiple citations including the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal, and the Joint Services Commendation Medal. Having served with honor defending the nation he loved, he also took great pride in following the careers of his son, Richard, and grandsons, Michael, Daniel, Benjamin, and David, as they followed his lead in donning the uniform.

Vaughn turned his life over to Jesus, his Lord and Savior, early. He met his wife at a Youth for Christ rally in Germany. Their love for each other and for the Lord dominated the remainder of their lives. Vaughn served as a church deacon, Sunday School Teacher, and Seniors Fellowship Director. He also loved to sing the Lord's praises serving as a choir member, soloist, and choir director.

Having served multiple roles during his near-94 years, his favorite times involved watching his family continue to grow and excel. He loved spending time with his children as they grew creating memories at various campgrounds, museums, and college graduations. He relished his role as grandpa, teaching the next generation to fish, play games, and sleep in his loving lap. He truly enjoyed each additional great-grandchild wanting nothing more than to hug each new arrival and assure them of his love.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., on Monday, February 2, 2026, at Oak Grove Baptist Church, 3801 Beulah Road, North Chesterfield, with the interment following at Sunset Memorial Park. Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m., on Sunday, February 1, 2026, at the Chester Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son.
