Maureen T. Norman

NORMAN, Maureen T., of Petersburg, Va., departed this life peacefully at home on January 14, 2021. She was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Walker H. Quarles Jr. and Henrietta Dorcas Campbell Quarles. Maureen attended Peabody High School and Matoaca High School, where she graduated in 1966. She received a bachelor's degree in 1970 and a master's degree in 1974 from Virginia State University. While attending Virginia State University, she became a proud member of the Alpha Eta Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. She began working at Patrick Henry Community College (PHCC) as an assistant professor of mathematics in the early '80s, and enjoyed an illustrious career there until her retirement in 2009. She was a faithful member of Saint Paul's Episcopal Church in Martinsville, Va., for over 25 years and Saint Stephen's Episcopal Church in Petersburg, Va., for the past 12 years. She leaves cherished memories to her husband, James Norman; six children, Yvette Bennett of Charlotte, N.C., Brent Thompson (Remy) of Richmond, Va., Nakeshia Staley (Ron) of Charlotte, N.C., Tonya Norman of Petersburg, Va., Brandi Pleasant of Richmond, Va. and Jami Hunt (Antony) of Richmond, Va.; along with 12 grandchildren, Kylan, Makel, Cameron, Camille, Brent Jr., Chris, Jason, Curtis III, Matthew, Mia, Mason and Aiden. Scholarship funds have been established in her name at Virginia State University and Patrick Henry Community College. Donations may be sent directly to the respective college or university advancement offices. A memorial service will be planned later when it is safe to gather.
