Maurianne Roberson Obituary

Maurianne Burton Roberson

May 16, 1930 - October 3, 2024

Maurianne Burton Roberson passed away at the age of 94 on October 3, 2024, at her home in Richmond, Virginia. She was born to J. Russell Burton, Sr., and Susie B. Burton on May 16, 1930. Though she spent the first year of her life in Georgia, she lived the rest of her 94 years in Richmond. Maurianne's life was filled with family, friends, and music.

Maurianne was predeceased by her husband of 65 years, William "Bill" K. Roberson, Jr. She is survived by sons W. Kelly Roberson, III, and J. Craig Roberson, Sr.; daughter Mary Kay Roberson Koenig; daughters-in-law Dianne B. Roberson and Jane V. Roberson; grandchildren James C. Roberson, Jr. (husband to Amanda Roberson), Justin C. Roberson (husband to Katelin Hill Roberson), and Carey B. Roberson (wife to Varun Keshri); and five great-grandchildren.

Maurianne graduated from John Marshall High School and attended Westhampton College before marrying Bill and starting a family. She lived a good life and loved her large family dearly. She was a fixture in the lives of her children and grandchildren, and was affectionately known as "Nana" by many. Nothing made her light up like young children, especially her great-grandchildren. She will be remembered by her family, friends, church community, and neighbors as a generous, kind, and giving person.

In addition to family and friends, music was a significant aspect of her life. Maurianne began playing piano while in early elementary school. By the time she was in 5th grade, she was playing for school events. During her high school years, she was invited to play piano for choral groups at the University of Richmond, as well as the organ at Weatherford Memorial Baptist Church. By the time she was 18, she was playing the organ at Grace Baptist Church, where she continued to play for more than 30 years. She played for countless weddings and funerals around the Richmond area. She was exceptional at accompanying choirs and soloists.

A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 10, at Grace Baptist Church. To attend the service virtually www.youtube.com/GraceBaptistChurchofRichmond. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made in her memory to the music ministry of Grace Baptist Church at www.rvagrace.org/give.

The family also wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to Maurianne's wonderful, loving caregivers: Lisa James, Jennifer James, Wendy James, Janella James, Jada James, Kadena Griffin, and Sha'Quim Knight.

The Burtons have been friends for many years. We went to Weatherford Bapt together and when Bill work with the USO at Second Bapt Church I met my husband. I lost him in 2017 after 58 years. So I have many memories of Bill and Maurianne it was a pleasure to have known them both. Right now I'm 86 years old and I will always remember both of them.

Such a wonderful obituary for Maurianne, who was my "Richmond" Mom. She and my Mom have known each other since they were in junior high. Such a rare thing to have friendships that cover decades. I am heartbroken for the Roberson family but also know that Maurianne is reunited with Billy. I will be in the UK on Nov. 10 but will try to watch virtually. I am filled with memories of this extraordinary woman. Sending comfort and love to all the Robersons. Rev. Nancy Hamlin Soukup

Craig, Kelly, Mary Kay...you know how I feel...your mom was my second mom..and the best of the two....I considered us all family...and always will.
From the sleep overs to the nights camping out, I will always be grateful you all let me into your lives...I will miss your mom, but will never forget her..ever...Ralph

I met Maurianne 15 years ago as the grandmother of my daughter´s boyfriend and then husband. She was always a very sweet and gracious lady. Before and after James and Amanda were married she included me and my husband to many holidays and celebrations at her home. She was a wonderful grandmother to my daughter and great grandmother to their children Rex and Maddox.
I played Words with Friends with Maurianne, she was a competitive player and always was so happy when she beat me, but she didn´t want me to let her win . We will all miss her, may she rest in Peace.
