Melissa Rowley Obituary

ROWLEY, Melissa Lynn, age 43, beloved daughter of Marjorie (Midge) Cooke, died June 20, 2007 at her home in Richmond. She had battled cancer for almost a year. She was preceded in death by her father, Clarke W. Rowley. She is survived by her two brothers, Clarke "Chip" Rowley of Seaford, Va., Richard "Rick" Rowley of Phoenix, Arizona; and her stepfather, Charles "Charley" Cooke. Melissa also had two stepbrothers, Stephen Cooke of Richmond, Va. and David Cooke of Charlotte, N.C. She had nine nephews and nieces and many wonderful cousins. She was especially close to her aunt and uncle, Joanne and Eddie Arsenault of New Castle, N.H. Her Uncle Eddie, who had been in hospice in New Hampshire, died within hours of Melissa's death. They had been a great comfort to each other in their struggles with cancer. Melissa graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1997. She most recently worked as a contract computer programmer for the SEC of Virginia. Melissa had adopted two kittens that she adored and were a tremendous comfort to her. Contributions may be made to the Massey Cancer Center, which treated her with great skill, kindness and wonderful care. Dr. Evan Reiter and Dr. Shiyu Song were magnificent to her and her mother. Her memorial service will be June 27 at 3 p.m. at Second Presbyterian Church. Her ashes will be interred in the church courtyard cinerarium, where her maternal grandmother is also interred.

Midge, Charlie, Rick, and Chip,
So sorry to hear of your loss. I can only imagine what you must feel like.
My memories of Missy are of long ago when the kids were small and played together living right behind each other was great, we had great times with our camping expeditions, and of course all the things that go with growing up.
It has been 30 years next year since we moved from Hidalgo but the fond memories are there along with the bad times.
I will remember you all in my prayers.
Sincerely,
Joyce

Melissa made a large number of new friends in recent years at one of the Slip's favorite restaurants, and she was a great friend to all that had the opportunity to meet her. She was very quick witted, very personable and funny and could put anyone in their place, should that be necessary. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family in this time of grieving. Melissa will truly be missed by her friends from the "regulars corner."

My deepest sympathies for your loss. Melissa and I were neighbors and friends 15 years ago. My best memories will be of all those summer weekends with her and friends in Nags Head. We lost touch when I moved away and then she did as well. She will be missed.

I worked with Melissa at the Department of Mental Health while she was here, and grew fond of her. She came to me and shared her frustrations with her job, and I hoped I was able to provide a sympathetic ear. She was hard-working, smart, and caring. Her death was a shock, and I'm going to miss her.
