Mildred Privott
March 18, 1929 - August 23, 2024
Mildred Whitfield Privott, 95, of Richmond, passed away peacefully on August 23, 2024. She was born Mildred Joyce Whitfield on March 18, 1929, to Solomon Paul and Pocahontas Holland Whitfield in Suffolk, VA. Mildred, lovingly known as "Grandma" to so many, was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Evelyn Bridger; brother, J.C. Whitfield; husband, Raleigh Aaron Privott, Jr.; and daughter, Cheryl Mahanes (Robert). She is survived by her son, Whit Privott (Cindi); grandchildren, Christina Mayhugh (Chuck), Bruce Privott (Rose), Carly Harold (Zane), and Tyler Privott; and seven great-grandchildren.
Mildred graduated from Holland High School in 1946 and married Raleigh in 1951. She had a long and successful career in the insurance industry and received several awards including Insurance Woman of the Year in 1987. She retired from The Hartford as a Senior Commercial Underwriter in 1993.
After retiring, she devoted much of her time to Widowed Persons Services (WPS), an outreach program in which trained volunteers offer support to newly widowed people. She served on the WPS Board of Directors and was awarded the Outstanding Service Award in 1994. She also enjoyed several part-time jobs later in life, including working the customer service desk at Willow Lawn Mall, where she made many new friends and reconnected with old ones passing through the mall. She last worked at Bliley's Funeral Home.
Mildred was a member of Skipwith Baptist Church for 58 years; serving and worshipping there brought her much joy. She was also a member of Ruth Chapter #8 of The Order of the Eastern Star, serving as Worthy Matron from 1998-1999.
Mildred lived her later years at Westminster Canterbury, where she thrived within the community, connected with friends and employees, and volunteered.
Mildred was well known for her beautiful sense of style and was always dressed impeccably. She will be remembered even more for her kindness, generosity, and bright spirit. She was a true southern lady that will be missed by many.
The family is having a private graveside at Greenwood Memorial Gardens, where Mildred will be laid to rest next to Raleigh. A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, September 27th at 3 p.m. at Westminster Canterbury, 1600 Westbrook Avenue, Spiritual Center. Please arrive early to allow time for shuttle service for parking. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be considered to either the Westminster Canterbury "Employee Christmas Fund" or Skipwith Baptist Church.
