Richard Mensing Obituary

Richard John Mensing

October 3, 1934 - November 13, 2025

Richard John Mensing Sr., a devoted husband, loving father and proud grandfather, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on November 13, 2025 at the age of 91. Known affectionately as Dick, he brought warmth, humor and sincerity to all who knew him.

A man whose family played a central role in his life, leaves behind his beloved wife of 64 years, Karen, his four children: Richard, Kristie, Tommy and Karrie and his two granddaughters, Kelleigh and Elizabeth.

Dick was a proud member of the United States Army; after his service, he graduated from the University of Maryland at College Park where he played baseball. The University and their sports teams remained an integral part of his life. Professionally, Dick built a career spanning several decades at Reynolds Metals Company. His leadership and ability to build strong relationships defined his tenure. He later continued his career at US Tag and Label, bringing the same integrity and skill set.

Beyond work, Dick made an indelible impact on communities in Richmond where he lived and worked with his charm, quick wit, kindness and genuine interest in others. He spent many years as a volunteer youth basketball coach and his dedication as a befriender at St. Edwards Catholic Church beautifully reflected the compassionate, attentive and generous person he was.

Dick will be deeply missed by his family, friends and all who were fortunate to know him.

After a private Mass, a Celebration of Life will be held honoring him at a later date.

[JONES FAMILY LOVES THE MENSINGS]
How I wish my father, Ralph Jones, were here to share with us, likely in rhyme, his gratitude and admiration of Dick Mensing. My father expressed his affection for Dick throughout the years: in person and publicly, in poetry and letters. These two men openly expressed their mutual love and respect, and they had fun together.

Throughout our childhood, my father told us that Dick Mensing possessed a quality rarely found in other men. "Dick Mensing," my father said, "never brags." Although he had every reason to brag about his success, his family, and himself, Dick put the focus on others. That's one reason why Dick was such a desirable golf partner and friend. "If you want to be respected in life," my father would say, "you need to be like Dick Mensing."

Dick loved my mother, Dolores, and my father loved Karen. These relationships, which grew deeper over time, will never be forgotten.
