Robert Gentry Obituary

GENTRY, Robert C. "Bob", Sr., was born in Richmond on October 12, 1934 and died on December 20, 2022. Bob's family moved to D.C., where he grew up in "Old Southwest." He graduated from McKinley Tech High School in June of 1952. In 1952, Bob and his family moved back to Richmond. He then went to work for W.L. Wachter, Electrical Contractor. From 1957 to 1959, Bob was in the Navy, stationed aboard the U.S.S. Picket in San Francisco. He returned to Richmond in 1959 and went back to work for W.L. Wachter. On November 27, 1965, Bob married his talented, beautiful wife, Joan Stankus Gentry. In 1969, he went to work for the Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority. On March 1, 1971, Joan and Bob had their son, Robert Jr. "Bobby," the light of their lives. Bob retired from the RRHA in 1996. Joan died January 1, 2015. Bob has been preceded in death by his wife, Joan; mother, Esther Mae Hoffman Gentry; father, Kenneth B. Gentry; and brother, Kenneth B. Gentry Jr. The lone survivor is Robert Jr. "Bobby." Bob's favorite saying was: "That reminds me of a joke." The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, at the West Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home, 11020 W. I had the pleasure of my first full-time job being Bobby's secretary when I was 19 years old, which was almost 50 years ago. Me, Bobby, Doris and Dan kept in touch all these years and met for the Lunch Buffet at Hunan East multiple times a year. At Christmastime, we would sit in the parking lot after lunch and sample some of Bobby's homemade eggnog and Joan's delicious cookies and candy. After Doris and Dan's passing; Bobby and I continued to meet for lunch occasionally. You could not have wanted a better friend than Bobby; always smiling and joking no matter what. I will miss him! Sending my thoughts and prayers to his other friends and family.

A wonderful friend for many years. He watched the Wizard Oz with my children many times (after sleeping over). Joan and Bob were the best of friends to my husband. I will miss him and his calls. Love to You Bobby

Sorry to hear about Bob´s passing. I was blessed to have known both Joan and Bob through their time attending cardiac rehab. Joan was an amazing woman, never letting how she felt get in the way of coming to exercise, Bob was always at her side. She helped me with my genealogy and was always dressed with everything matching, down to her handbag. Every Christmas she would make delicious homemade candies and Bob would make sure she had the "right" chocolate to make them. After Joan´s passing, Bob kept up the tradition of bringing the staff his very own homemade egg nog, "tiger milk" as he used to call it. Bob always had a smile on his face and often had something humorous to share. I will always remember Joan and Bob with fondness. My sincere condolences to their family.
