Robert Schueler Obituary

Robert Schueler, Lieutenant Colonel, U.S. Marine Corps (Retired) was relieved on April 22, 2005 from the hardest duty of his career - a cruel disease that robbed him of strength and connection to reality, but could not conquer his faith, humor, and concern for his fellow man. Left behind to celebrate his promotion to eternal service with his Supreme Commander, are Madeline, his wife and sweetheart for 50 years; his brother, John and wife, Helen; five beloved children and children-in-law, Madeline and Lanny Jean, Jenny and David Williams, Kathy and Tony Brock, Billy and Patt Schueler, and Bobby and Sharon Schueler; and 11 cherished grandchildren. Born in 1928 in Jersey City, New Jersey, Bob grew up in Danbury, Conn. and enlisted in the Marine Corps at 18. He earned an A.B. degree from Brown University through NROTC and spent his life eagerly serving his Lord, his country and his family. In his 26 years in the Corps, he was primarily an artilleryman, but he was equally proficient in naval gunfire support, logistics, and military intelligence. He retired in 1972, having fought in both Korea and Viet Nam. Adopting Richmond as home, he spent the next 20 years applying his leadership and integrity in manufacturing, his work in the church, and his warm love for his family. At age 65, he trained as an EMT to drive for Forest View Rescue Squad. Whether military or civilian, he was never too busy to served his Lord in any way needed, filling any office from elder to church cleaner. An avid reader and a fount of military history, he enjoyed gardening and was always loyal to his Redskins. His last years were spent in Brandermill Woods Health Care Center, where he matched the wonderful staff in dispensing love and concern to everyone. The family will receive visitors 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Bliley Funeral Homes' Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Road. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 1100 West Grace Street. Bob would be honored by any contributions to Bethlehem Lutheran Church Operating Funds or to Wycliffe Bible Translators, P.O. Box 628200, Orlando, Fla. 32862-8200. S.D.G.

Madeline, We just learned of Bob's death and we are sorry he is gone, but glad he is relieved of such difficult duty. We will always remember his ready smile when the two of you used to walk through Shenandoah.
