Robert Talcott Obituary

TALCOTT, Robert Huntington, "Bob," passed away January 13, 2022 in midafternoon, listening to some of his favorite hit songs from the '40s, '50s and '60s. Born November 26, 1944, he was 77 years old and died of heart failure following three years' extra time benefitting from a mechanical pump in his heart.

Bob's was a life well-lived, as many would attest. He graduated from his beloved Ames High School in Ames, Iowa, then spent two years at ISU singing second male lead each year in Kiss Me Kate and also The Music Man. Then he graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Iowa, majoring in languages and, in particular, Russian. He spent time in the Soviet Union for a month as a student. Then, as a captain in the Air Force, he was stationed in Berlin for four years, presumably translating Russian for military intelligence. This is where he gained his lifelong love for Europe and, specifically, Germany, France and Italy, all languages in which he was fluent.

After getting his law degree from Georgetown Law, he spent 16 years practicing law in Richmond. Subsequently, he owned for three years his Island Grill restaurant in Shockoe Bottom. The rest of his career was as a sommelier, his dream job, at Buckheads Steak House and finally at CanCan. He achieved master's sommelier status, created impeccable wine programs at each restaurant and was renowned for his wine knowledge, ability to make people have the best experience ever as they dined and drank wine. He was a mentor to many in the food and beverage industry in Richmond. He was much-loved.

Bob was always known for his personability, his excellence and for the virtues he exemplified and inspired in others.

Bob was a great son, uncle and friend. He is survived by his two brothers, Marion Talcott (Jo), Kenneth Wilson Talcott (Cathy); and sister, Clarice Jean Boomershine. Others include his large extended family of nieces and nephews, as well as innumerable friends.

A celebration of his life is planned for Tuesday, January 18, 2022, from 4 to 7 p.m. at CanCan on Cary Street, Richmond. Masks and social distancing are strongly recommended. Another memorial service will be planned for the first half of September in Des Moines for those who cannot attend otherwise. Donations may be made to your charity of choice in his memory.

I know Bob died two years ago but I miss him as a friend. I ate at CanCan every Friday and Saturday night. We shared many things but I truly miss our close relationship and especially advice.

I know you are resting in Richmond and Iow.

Do not ruin the food and atmosphere at Can Can. Keep it first class and very French.

What a terrific gentlemen. I went through the Signals Intelligence Officers class 08117 at Goodfellow AFB (San Angelo, TX) with Bob from 1967-8. He, a fellow named Bud Blount, and I were great friends. When not in class or studying we sought out hole in the wall Tex Mex places and ate hot, spicy salsas til tears streamed down our faces. We loved good food and would drive out to Lowake, TX to eat at a famous steak house there. From Goodfellow Bob went to Berlin while I went to Fukuoka, Japan. The last time I saw Bob was in Washington DC in 1976. Rest in love old friend.

So sorry to hear of Bob´s passing. My family loved Bob and we had many good times in DC, Northern Virginia and Richmond. My daughter Sasha loved her "Uncle Bob." I did too as he was always so appreciative of my Southern cooking and hospitality.

Bob was a close friend, confidant, traveling companion and drinking buddy for well over 20 years. Always upbeat, positive and encouraging in every, and all situations. Bob lifted the bar for all of us as human beings. It was an honor and a pleasure being his friend.

I can't believe it. Bob was such a great great guy. He wrote me a recommendation to business school. He was my predecessor at the legal department at VHDA and he was always great to be around. He and Don Ritenour allowed my ex and I to use their place at N. Myrtle Beach. Unfortunately, we kind of lost touch over the last several years. Thanks Bob and RIP !

Bob was a great gift to us! He increased our knowledge of wine and France! The wine dinners at Can Can were a highlight because of him. Thank you dear friend and praying the Lord´s peace for your family.

I celebrate Bob's life today. I met Bob Talcott at Tobacco Company as a waitress in the late 80's, we formed a friendship over numerous dinners. I learned the art of fine dining and wine pairing at an early age thanks to his knowledge and guidance.
In the late 80's, Bob invited me to join him in New York City. He wanted to try a restaurant called The Odeon in Tribeca and then go to Aria. As a New Yorker, I now know that was the most sophisticated, under the radar, hottest ticket in town. Bob- you really knew your stuff. I love you and hope there are many vineyards in heaven to keep you busy. With enormous gratitude, Lisa Bowles
