Russell Charles Knapp Jr.

1937 - 2023

Russell Charles Knapp, Jr. went to be with the Lord on Sunday, October 15, 2023. Russ was born on March 12, 1937 in Norfolk, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his sister, Marie Zimmerman. Russ is survived by his wife of 56 years, Grace Wallace Knapp. Also cherishing his memory are his three daughters: Deborah Carter, Tamara Ingram (Randall) and Catherine Kyllingstad (Mark), his seven grandchildren: Michelle, Blair, Jordan, Justin, Stephen, Shane and Heath, and his 5 great grandchildren. Russ was a graduate of Norview High School, Old Dominion University and the College of William and Mary. Russ served his country in the US Army as a member of the 101st Airborne Division. He worked in education as an elementary school principal and later with the Virginia Department of Emergency Management. He was an active member of several churches, where he taught Sunday school classes and was very involved in choir and musical performances. Most recently, he worshiped at Cool Spring Baptist Church in Mechanicsville. A lifetime singer and barbershopper, Russ sang with the Virginians (formerly Tobaccoland Chorus) and many quartets, most notably the Nickel Bridge. In addition to his love of the church and singing, Russ loved spending time with his family and adored his grandchildren and great grandchildren. In his early adult years, Russ worked as a lifeguard at Virginia Beach. His love for the beach and water continued, and he and Grace lived at Lake Anna in their retirement years. Russ will be remembered for his genuine love and care, his incredible joy and faith and his unwavering belief in Jesus. Psalm 16 encourages us that Russ is now in God's presence and in fullness of joy. We grieve but not without hope. Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 23 at Cool Spring Baptist Church, 9283 Atlee Station Rd, Mechanicsville. Visitation begins at 10 am and the memorial service will be held at 11 am. A reception for friends and family of Russ will follow.
