Samuel McCammon Obituary

McCAMMON, The Reverend Samuel Douglas Jr., 89, a native and longtime resident of Richmond and most recently of St. Petersburg, Florida, passed away on Wednesday, August l9, 2009. He is survived by Jean McCammon, his loving wife of 66 years; and his devoted children, Ann Justiss and John McCammon. He was adored by his four grandchildren, Adrianne Justiss, Katherine Hottinger, Molly Brose and Erin Hopkins; and by his great-grandson, Charles Hottinger. He graduated from the University of Richmond and Union Theological Seminary. As a Presbyterian minister, he first served in two pastorates in West Virginia, and then at Fairfield Presbyterian Church, in Richmond, and finally at Green Acres Presbyterian Church, in Portsmouth, Va. He then became the Executive Presbyter of Norfolk Presbytery, and then Westminster Presbytery (Florida), and finally Hanover Presbytery. In his retired years, he served in several interim pastorates and leadership posts in Virginia and Florida. Sam McCammon was always the last to leave any meeting of people, the one always with a smile and a quip, and the one who lifted up those around him. He will be dearly missed. Memorial donations may be made to Camp Hanover, 3163 Parsleys Mill Road, Mechanicsville, Va. 23111.

Hi "Aunt" Jean (and John and Anne) - I just learned of Sam's passing via a friend's email. He had a special place in my life and in my heart. He saved me, at a time when I was most vulnerable, and was always a close and treasured friend to my parents, Gwen and Fred. Unlike many, he took up his calling with energy and great cheer - I celebrate his life! Love, Bill Funk

Dearest Jean, Just two months ago my brother Brian and I were talking to your John about how much you and Sam were enjoying being back in Florida. (Our nephew was marrying the daughter of one of John's close friends.) I told him some stories about what a wonderful and memorable fourth-grade teacher you were, so up-front about your faith. Years later, my first week at Union Theological Seminary in Virginia, I called you up to thank you for being one of my earliest influences. You & Sam invited me to your home for dinner, and we shared many fond memories. (You were also my brother Larry's fourth-grade teacher. Perhaps you played a part in his entering the ministry as well!) While I didn't know Sam well, I have always held you in the highest regard. You and Sam have given so very much of your selves. Now it is our privilege to reciprocate, as we remember you in our thoughts and heartfelt prayers. "Well done, thou good and faithful servant."

Dear Jean,
I've just learned from Becky Cooley that Sam is in a better place. I remember so well how much I relied on him to guide me and share his vast wisdom on church affairs with me when we were shepherding Ginter Park through a difficult time. Not only did he share his wisdom with me, but his strength gave me strength. Then there was his inimitable sense of humor! I thank God that I knew him. May God bless you and sustain you.
With love,
Charles Cornwell

Dear Jean,

Shocked and so sorry to hear about Sam's death. I got the message a 3 PM today, about the time your service was to begin.

Sam was a dear friend, "business partner", mentor for me. Most of all he had an unbelievable gift of wisdom.

Julie and I are praying for you and all of your family.
