Stephen "Steve" Arthur Mattis
Stephen "Steve" Arthur Mattis, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed peacefully on July 5, 2025, with his wife, Lynn, by his side. He left behind a legacy of laughter, love, and a few well-timed smart remarks. He was 65 years old. Born with a mischievous grin and a boisterous spirit, as the only son and youngest child to his parents, Steve was known for his big heart and even bigger personality. He proudly spent his working years as a plumber, fixing more than pipes, often mending problems with a joke, a story, or a home-cooked meal. Known affectionately as Papa Steve to more than just his grandchildren, Steve's greatest joy came from his family, including his sons, Michael, Jason (Emma), Ryan (Brittany); daughter, Beckie (Wes); older sisters, Patty (John), Laurie (Jim) and Susie (Dean); and especially his seven cherished grandchildren, Christopher, Matthew, Rebekah, Scarlett, Joshua, Noah and Owen. Whether sharing a meal, offering a heartfelt prayer before dinner, or watching his grandkids grow, Steve's love for his family was unmatched. His friends often joked that the only thing he loved nearly as much as his grandkids was rooting, often loudly, for his Buffalo Bills, win or lose. For over 20 years, Steve served as a Scout Troop Leader for Troop 880, guiding countless young boys from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts. Those who hiked and camped alongside him will never forget his enthusiasm for the outdoors, his knack for storytelling around the fire, and his ability to make everyone feel welcome, whether on the trail, at a family party, chatting on the back porch, the garage, or working on his woodworking projects. Steve's legacy is one of love, laughter, and connection. He believed life was too short not to share it, whether with family by blood or by choice. If he could leave us with one reminder, it would be simple, "Always root for the Buffalo Bills, life's too short, and family is important, given or chosen."
Friends and family will be welcomed for a visitation Tuesday, July 22, 2025, 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., and funeral services will be Wednesday, July 23, 2025, at 11 a.m., both at Bliley's Funeral on Hull Street, where stories will be shared, glasses will be raised, and his memory will be honored, just as he would have wanted. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to
St. Jude’s or the
ASPCA.
