Sylvia Strum Obituary

Sylvia Strum

July 4, 1938 - May 7, 2025

Sylvia Marie Arthurs Strum, 86, passed away peacefully at home on May 7, 2025.

She is survived by her devoted and loving husband of 65 years, Michael Strum; her beloved daughters, Cheryl Wedel (Stuart) and Kelly Lewis (Eddie); grandchildren, Joshua, Matthew, Lauren, and Logan; sister, Brenda Jennette (I.T.); brother-in-law, Leonard Strum (Marilyn); and many cherished cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Born on July 4, 1938, to Dominick and Ethel Arthurs, Sylvia was raised in Suffolk, Va. A dedicated student, she maintained perfect attendance throughout her school years. She later moved to Richmond, where she attended secretarial school and began her career at Best Products. On October 24, 1959, she married the love of her life, Mike, and the couple eventually settled in Mechanicsville in 1971. Sylvia's life was rooted in faith, family, and community. She found joy in her roles as a wife, mother, grandmother, sister, friend, and neighbor. She was involved in the family business, All Aboard Child Development Center, and was a devoted member of Church of the Redeemer Catholic Church since its founding in 1976. Known for her grace, warmth, and gentle spirit, Sylvia embodied the charm of a true Southern lady. Her presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. The family wishes to express heartfelt thanks to the compassionate caregivers at Commonwise Home Care, Bon Secours Hospice, and the local Fire/EMS team. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Henry Volunteer Fire/EMS, 9634 Chamberlayne Rd, Mechanicsville, VA 23116.

Family and friends are invited to a visitation from 1 to 2 p.m., followed by a Celebration of Life starting at 2 p.m. on June 1, 2025, at Woody Funeral Home, 9271 Shady Grove Rd, Mechanicsville, VA 23116.

Aunt Sylvia will always be remembered for her loving kindness and her ability to know just what to do when people needed her the most. It was not unusual to get a call from her when I was feeling blue, or a package from her with the latest toy that no one could find in stores. I was the envy of my in-laws when my child had the only Tickle Me Elmo East of the Mississippi because of Sylvia Strum!

She was the very best godmother a child could have, and I will dearly miss her. Her´s was a life well lived! I celebrate her and am so very thankful to have been privileged to know a woman who was always so calm, so cool and always so collected.

I never heard her raise her voice or speak in anger, she was always so patient and kind. She truly knew how to listen to people. We all still have a lot to learn from Aunt Sylvia.

A beloved sister-in-law, more like a sister. She was a shining light to us. Loving and compassionate. Gone from here but memories forever in our heart.
