Thomas Leonard Obituary

Thomas Leonard

February 28, 1958 - July 22, 2024

Thomas Joseph Leonard "Tommy," age 66, of Ashland, passed away peacefully on July 22, after battling kidney disease.

He was predeceased by his father, John Barry Leonard and mother, Ann White Leonard. He proudly leaves three daughters, Crystal Norman (John), of Mechanicsville, Carrie Leonard (Stephen), of College Park, MD, and Kimberly Leonard (Matt), of Richmond; and four grandchildren, Conner and Bryce Tomlin, and Elliot and Leo Belyea. He is also survived by four siblings, John Barry Leonard, Jr. (Nancy), of Sycamore, IL, Patricia Higgins (Ron), of Ashland, Barbara Dickinson (Bill), of Henrico, and twin sister, Cheryl Harris (Ron), of Ashland; and many nieces and nephews. Tommy grew up and raised his girls on the family farm in Ashland, where he could reliably be found tending the land, pondering mathematical problems, or engaged in a rousing game of Scrabble. A graduate of Patrick Henry High School ('76), Tommy attended UVA and worked for many years with Hanover Fabricators, then Carter and Universal Lumber companies, and enjoyed golfing in his free time. Despite later medical challenges, he maintained a sharp sense of humor and remained close with loved ones, including his dear friend, Ann Prutzman, and his lifelong buddies, Blair Funk, John White, and Jeb Midyette. Tommy's intelligence, photographic memory, and wit were amazing to all who knew him and he will be greatly missed.

A celebration of life will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, September 7, 2024, at Nelsen Funeral Home – Reid Chapel (Ashland). The family thanks the many local providers and services involved in Tommy's care, and requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Brain and Behavior Research Foundation (www.bbrfoundation.org) or National Kidney Foundation (www.kidney.org).
