Thomas Paul McDermott
Thomas Paul McDermott passed away on July 19, 2024. Tom is survived by his wife of 60 years, Catherine Thomas; sons, T. Paul, Jr., (Fran), Christopher (Heather), and Kevin; grandchildren, Addison Harris, Thomas III, Emily, William, and Finn. Tom is also survived by his sister, Maeve Dever (Hugh); and several nieces and nephews, and many dear friends. Growing up in Brooklyn and Queens, NY, with his parents and sisters, his Irish heritage defined his upbringing, his character, and his faith. He, like his father, was blessed with the gift of gab, wit and stubbornness. He graduated from Chaminade High School in Mineola, NY, Belmont Abbey College in Belmont, NC. After completing his military service with the USAF, Tom and Cathy settled in Charlotte, NC, to raise their family. He received his MBA from UNC-C, He was employed by the City of Charlotte in Landscaping, Cemeteries and Parks and he was a member of the Tree Commission, and was a past President of the Carolina Carousel Parade held each Thanksgiving. He retired from Mecklenburg Co Parks and Recreation. They moved to Midlothian, VA, to spend more time with their sons and grandchildren. Tom was a devoted and proud Pop Pop. He was a very loyal friend to many and loved nothing more than a long conversation about politics, history, or current events. He enjoyed his courses at Life Long Learning Institute of Chesterfield.
A funeral liturgy and reception will be held on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, at 11:30 a.m., at The Church of Epiphany, 11000 Smoketree Drive, North Chesterfield, VA, 23236.
