Timothy Torrez Obituary

It is with great sorrow we announce the passing of Timothy Patrick Torrez, P.E., on August 18, 2023. With family and friends by his side, Tim passed peacefully following a courageous brief fight with complications arising from pancreatic cancer. Tim, born on March 7, 1968, is preceded in death and received by his loving father, Joseph Torrez, and is survived by his mother, Rita Torrez of Pittsburgh, siblings Joe (Mariette) of Abu Dhabi, and Brian (Joseph Selden) and Maria (Alfred) Sossi of Pittsburgh. Tim is the beloved, caring, wise, fun, and charmingly irreverent teacher and uncle of Anna, Nick, and Joshua Torrez, and Kevin and Ryan Sossi.

Tim's professional and social circles around Richmond were broad and diverse, representing the expanse of his interests, hobbies, and energy level. If he wasn't working, at Republic Services in Richmond operating landfills, then Tim was working the front of the house at the Crazy Rooster Brewery in Powhaten which he cofounded in 2019, reveling in calling bingo, leading trivia night, pacing the Running Roosters each Thursday, or simply making each guest feel at home. Tim volunteered at the Richmond Railroad Museum where he was a board member and past board president, bringing his childhood passion for trains to life in a meaningful giving way. He expertly guided his softball team, Where My Pitches At, to moral barroom victories if not actual ones on the field. He unleashed his alter ego, Tune Time Tim, and spinning music at weddings and local events. Tim enjoyed the bounty of the Virginia woods, on the trail or on the water with friends, fishing, hunting, hiking, or just laughing and enjoying. He traveled to and explored different lands far and farther, in the States or overseas, most recently in May to Italy with his family. You get the idea...Tim was busy living each moment to its fullest. We're still not sure he ever slept, but we do know Tim enjoyed what downtime he allowed himself at home with his cat Sidney Crosby, a nod to his love for his hometown Pittsburgh Penguins. Tim's friendships ran strong and deep within those circles; whomever he was with, Tim was Tim, unapologetically authentic to his core, as well as loyal, generous, loving, curious, caring, and kind..and yes, charmingly irreverent.

Born in Steubenville, Ohio, Tim was raised in Pittsburgh, PA and moved on to attend university at Virginia Tech and setting his roots in Virginia following his graduation as a Civil Engineer in 1991. Tim started his career as a Senior Environmental Engineer at the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, after 4 years moving onto a role as Project Engineer at Joyce Engineering. Following a 6 year stint there, Tim moved on to work for the County of Henrico as a Senior Engineer until 2007 before moving on to Republic Services as their Environmental Manager.

During Tim's brief illness and stay in hospital, he was surrounded physically and spiritually by many friends and colleagues across Richmond and far beyond. Always a giver and never one to ask for help and risk inconveniencing others, the show of love and support given to Tim by his friends and the wonderful caregivers in the ICU of VCU Medical Center sustained him. Tim's family is forever grateful.

Though we lost a dear son, brother, uncle, friend, colleague, and giver, we can be comforted knowing his spirit and love lives on, magnified and extended through all of those whom he touched.

Family and friends will be received at William Slater II Funeral Home, 1650 Greentree Road, Pittsburgh, PA on Friday August 25th from 3 - 8pm, followed by a mass of Christian burial at Our Lady of Grace Church in Pittsburgh on Saturday August 26th at 10am.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Richmond RailroadMuseum (https://olddominionchapter.com/Donate) or Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (www.pancanorg/donate).

Sorry for your loss.....Tim was a member of the "Dragons" Sportsbackers Half Marathon Training Team for two years. He was always support and encouraging to his fellow runners. He smiled through the tough runs as well as the easy ones. The world will be a little less bright without him. Praying for family and friends

My sincere condolences to the Torrez family. I didn't know Tim other than through work, but he was always fun to chat with, especially when bantering about Wawa vs. Sheetz hoagies, he of course being a bigger fan of Wawa. I recall his excitement for HoagieFest! Thank you for sharing such a lovely tribute about Tim. He certainly lived a full life, a great example for us all.

My heartfelt condolences to Tims family and friends. I did not have the opportunity to get to know Tim. I met him as a contractor doing some work on his house in Bellevue and we hit it off well, he was a very nice guy. A good person gone to soon.

Our family sends our sincere to Tim´s family. I knew Tim both through work and socially. Tim was the DJ for our youngest daughter,Erin. Her wedding and reception was held at Hanover Tavern, a colonial wayside in Hanover County. The reception was held on the second floor above the Taverns restaurant. Tim being a good Hokie held started the festivities off with Enter Sandman to the delight of the Hokie bride and wedding party. All the Hokies present (lots) immediately began jumping, within seconds a pale faced restaurant manager appeared explaining the ceiling in the restaurant was coming down on their diners. I subsequently spoke with neighbors who were dining and they confirmed the frightening dining experience. Tim was therefore responsible for one of our family´s favorite stories when the Hokies almost brought down one of the oldest structures in Virginia. Rest in peace Tim
