Virginia Guthrie Obituary

GUTHRIE, Virginia "Beth" Elizabeth Holman, 74, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her husband and children, on Thursday, May 13, 2021. Beth was preceded in death by her mother, Virginia "Gin" Chewning Holman; and her father, William "Pete" Thornhill Holman. Beth is survived by her husband of 52 years, James "Jim" Bernard Guthrie; two children and their spouses, Julie Guthrie Parris (Shane) and James Brian Guthrie (Jackie); three grandchildren, Jacob Michael Parris, Jules Lolly Guthrie and James Brady Guthrie; and three siblings and their spouses, William Holman (Regina), Helen Gordon (Larry) and Janet Bowers (David).

Beth graduated from Patrick Henry High School in 1965 and then continued her education at Westhampton Teachers College (University of Richmond) where she graduated in 1969. She was married to Jim Guthrie on August 9, 1969. Beth taught at Rockville Elementary School and, after raising her children, Maude Trevvett Elementary School. She was a beloved wife, sister, mother and grandmother.

Beth loved to sew things up for her family and tend to the land around her home in one of the many soybean fields of Hanover County. She loved to visit the Outer Banks and have lunch with her friends. She fed every stray animal that showed up at the house. There were opossums, raccoons, a family of skunks and cats, including their beloved Blackie, who eventually moved in with them and lived the rest of his years purring in their laps. Most of all, Beth loved to spend time with her family in her living room, sitting in a chair that matched her husband's, fussing over the cats that scratched at the sides.

Family and friends will be received at a later date and there will be no funeral services upon the request of the deceased. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network at www.pancan.org.

My thoughts and prayers are with the you and the family as you mourn the loss of a very special lady! I worked with Beth at Trevvett and enjoyed that I was able to spend time talking and sharing special moments with her. She was full of love for everyone and had a heart of gold. Rest in Peace Dear Friend ... Until we meet again!!
