I deeply regret that I am 24 years late in reading this obituary.

Bill was my favorite professor. He was glamorous and striking in his classroom wit and skill. When I returned to Sewanee to finish my degree after my stint in the army, he was very welcoming (he immediately told me to drop the Dr. Bonds and just call him Bill, but maybe not in front of other students) and we quickly became friends. Many were the times that I dropped by his office to share a smoke and a chat between classes. And when I mentioned to him that I was considering double-majoring in English and Classics, he looked very alarmed and gave me this unforgettable advice: "Joe, to get an undergraduate degree in classics, you read the 20 great books. To get a masters degree in classics, you read the 50 not-so-great books. And to get a PhD in classics, you have to read the 100 truly awful books. For god's sake, don't do it!!"

I miss him to this day, and recall him very fondly. Great teachers are rare, as are great friends. He was both.

"Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father' house there are many dwelling places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, so that where I am, there you may be also."

- Jesus, in John 14:1-3, NRSV

"I thank my God when I remember you,

for He has blessed my life with yours.

With every prayer of mine for you,

I'm filled with joy

for I hold you in my heart.

And I pray that your love may abound yet more in knowledge,

and in all judgment that you may approve excellent things.

That you may be sincere

being filled with the fruits of righteousness

unto the glory and praise of God.

Grace to you and peace to you

from God our Father, Christ our Lord.

I thank my God when I remember you."

In loving memory of my uncle, friend and soulmate.
