William Hevener Obituary

William Ray Hevener

June 27, 1935 - June 30, 2025

William "Bill" Ray Hevener passed away peacefully on June 30, 2025, at the age of 90. He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 64 years, Patricia "Patsy" Merica Hevener, and their two daughters: Wendy (Douglas) Briskman of Chesterfield, Sharon (Perry) Barber of Mechanicsville. Bill was a proud grandfather to two grandchildren: Rachel (Jonathan) Wood of Selma, NC, and Meredith (Seth) Bryant of Lottsburg, VA. He is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Harry David and Helen Letcher (McComb) Hevener, and his two siblings, Henderson H. Hevener and Betty Ann (Hevener) Melvin.

Born and raised on the family dairy farm, Heverston Farm, in Fishersville, VA, Bill developed a strong work ethic and love for the land early in life. He graduated from Wilson Memorial High School, where he was a proud member of the football and basketball teams, and went on to study at Potomac State University before serving in the United States Marine Corps. As a crew chief on twin-engine aircraft, Bill served with pride and often fondly recalled his time stationed at Quantico and Parris Island.

Following his service, Bill and Patsy settled in Richmond, where he began a 32-year career with DuPont Spruance Manufacturing. His dedication and leadership contributed to major developments in the Nomex, Tyvek, and Kevlar Plant III operations. His colleagues remember him as a man of integrity, reliability, and deep commitment to his work.

Bill's passion for sports extended beyond his youth, as he became actively involved in the Chesterfield Quarterback League and coached youth football and basketball with the Falling Creek Athletic Association, forming lasting friendships and mentoring countless young athletes.

An avid outdoorsman, Bill found joy in golfing, camping trips to Myrtle Beach and the Blue Ridge Mountains, and relaxing at the family's second home on Lake Gaston. In his later years, he worked in landscaping before fully retiring to enjoy time on the water and with loved ones.

A military honors and committal service will be held at the Virginia Veterans Cemetery in Amelia Courthouse, VA. A Celebration of Life Reception will follow. Details will be announced in the coming days.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff at Crossroads at Bon Air and Suncrest Hospice for their kind and compassionate care.

Flowers are welcome, or memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital at www.stjude.org.

Bill found me floundering without direction. He gave me that direction and so much more. I owe so much of what I have become to him. May he find the rest he seeked as there is no person on earth that deserves it more.
