William Riggs Obituary
February 11, 1939 - September 16, 2024
It is with great sadness that the family of William H. Riggs, Jr., age 85, announce his passing on September 16, 2024, in Richmond, Virginia. He was born on February 11, 1939, in Plainfield, New Jersey to W. Harold and Alice Riggs.
Bill was a graduate of Cranford High School in 1957 where he was a member of their 1956 State Championship basketball team. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Randolph Macon College in Ashland, Virginia in 1961. While there he was a member of the Randolph Macon basketball team and Lamba Chi Alpha fraternity.
He enjoyed summers at the Jersey shore, saltwater fishing, golfing, and family vacations on Gwynn's Island. Bill delighted in filling the grill full of chicken for the entire neighborhood, eating a thick steak in New York, fixing anything around the house, and woodworking. His wonderfully handcrafted cutting boards and tables have found their way into homes of his family and many friends.
He supported the local YMCA by volunteering his time and particularly enjoyed their Indian Guides program with its emphasis on father-son bonding.
An Army veteran, Bill spent his professional career with Dominion Resources, retiring as an Assistant Corporate Secretary in 1999.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Jill; sons Billy (Lynn) Riggs and Bob (Renee) Riggs; grandchildren Haley and Will; Robert, Chris, and Joe; siblings Barbara Conley and Audrey Luetters; Jill's siblings Cecile (Jim) Cox, Joe (Bonnie) Andrews, Bill (Susan) Andrews, and John Andrews.
A funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, at Westhampton Memorial Park at 10000 Patterson Avenue, Henrico, Virginia, 23238 in the Mausoleum.
The family would like to express our appreciation for the wonderful help and care provided by his friends and caregivers. In lieu of flowers, the family requests any memorial contributions be made to Tuckahoe Volunteer Rescue Squad.
